Arena to be future symbol of Zagreb
CONTEMPORARY SPORTS TEMPLE

Zagreb Mayor: Arena Construction Begins On July 20

Other than sports, Arena Zagreb will also host cultural, entertainment and business events.

"The building of Arena Zagreb will begin on July 20 in Laniste," announced Zagreb Mayor Milan Bandic today, during the first presentation of the Arena Zagreb project at Dverce palace.

The future symbol of Zagreb, Arena Zagreb, is a joint project of the City, Croatian government, and companies Ingra and TriGranit. It will be a multi-function hall for sports, but also for cultural, entertainment and business events, and it will have 15,200 seats and, with telescopic stands, it will be able to hold up to 25,000 people.

"Other than handball, the Arena will also serve a purpose for basketball, indoor football, boxing, athletics and many other sports, as well as for big concerts and congresses," pointed out architect Alan Leo Plestina, who is at the helm of the team of architects who worked on the project.

The Arena will also contain accompanying catering services, business and commercial facilities, a small hall where athletes will train, and club and management facilities and dressing rooms.

Ingra chairman Igor Oppenheim said that he would try to have the "contemporary sports temple" completed within 15 months.

"We have a short deadline to build, but this is a challenge for us to which we will know how to respond," said Oppenheim, adding that the total worth of Arena Zagreb was 87 million euros.

The City and the government will pay the annual lease of Arena Zagreb in the amount of 7.5 million euros.

When the press asked Bandic about the accompanying communal infrastructure which will be built and financed by the City of Zagreb, Bandic replied that, other than access roads and leveling a rotary on three levels, the City would also realize bigger projects in the vicinity, such as the new Remiza (city district), Terme Zagreb, as well as complete the University Hospital in Blato.

Bandic sent a special message to Croatian handball players, without whose success Croatia and Zagreb would not have gotten the chance to host the World Handball Championship in 2009, and he announced the building of a Croatian handball hall in Svetice for 5,000 visitors.

RUKOMET: PREDSTAVLJENA "ARENA ZAGREB"

11.07.2007
