Abstract: Was the break-up of Yugoslavia really inevitable and motivated by "deep ethnic hatreds"? Or, were ethnic identities manipulated for political gain? This conflict cannot be explained by either of these simplified explanations alone.

The Croats were both victims and aggressors during the Yugoslav wars; these roles are still influential in contemporary Croatian identity. This lecture will examine the contradictory roles of Croats in the conflict for independence and their influence on Croatia's current European Union candidacy and growing tourism industry.
