Croatia: The Yugoslav Past and the European Future
What: Ph.D. candidate Katharine Hawkins of the Uniiversity of Connecticut's Anthropology Department will present a lecture titled "Croatia: The Yugoslav Past and the European Future"
When: April 15, 2007, 3 p.m.
Where: Biological Sciences and Physics Building, Room 130 University of Connecticut 2019 Hillside Road, Unit 1023 Storrs, CT 06269-1023
Abstract: Was the break-up of Yugoslavia really inevitable and motivated by "deep ethnic hatreds"? Or, were ethnic identities manipulated for political gain? This conflict cannot be explained by either of these simplified explanations alone.
The Croats were both victims and aggressors during the Yugoslav wars; these roles are still influential in contemporary Croatian identity. This lecture will examine the contradictory roles of Croats in the conflict for independence and their influence on Croatia's current European Union candidacy and growing tourism industry.
