During the transition process in Croatia following the first multiparty elections in 1990, at which time a new state was established in conditions of war, media freedom found itself at the brunt of an autocratic regime.
Now, two years since the change in government, the general conclusion is that heavy pressure on journalism which had marked the Tudjman era has disappeared. However, it may also be concluded that almost all important media-related problems from that era are still present - public television is still a distant goal, legal regulations on the media are still far below the desired European standards, the state is still the owner of a large part of the media space.
