“uNcLE mAROJE”  invited to DUBROVNIK theatre FESTIVAL 2004

IN DUBROVNIK,  CROATIA

                                                                                                            January 9, 2004

Dear friend:

Our drama department is honored that Mr. Ivica Kuncevic, the Artistic Director of the Dubrovnik Festival, has invited our forthcoming production of Uncle Maroje by one of the most distinguished Croatian playwrights, Marin Drzic], to be shown at next summer’s Dubrovnik Festival 2004. This international Festival normally invites only significant professional theatre companies. We are the only university theatre ever to be included in its program. This is a great honor for us in recognition of our Drama Department’s reputation as well as an opportunity for our students and American audiences to be exposed to and learn about the cultural wealth and the beauty of the Renaissance world and Croatian culture to be found in Dubrovnik and Croatia in the past and the present.

The Dubrovnik Festival has been a member of the European Festivals Association since 1956 and is one of the oldest theatre festivals in Europe. Its prestige is comparable to festivals in Salzburg, Edinburgh and Avignon.  Among the theatre companies which have performed at the Festival are: England’s Old Vic, The Royal National Theatre, the Bristol Old Vic; Vienna’s Burgteater, Italy’s Piccolo Teatro; Sweden’s Royal Dramatic Theatre, Greece’s Greek National Theatre; the Chech Republic’s Divadlo na Zabradili; Poland’s Teatr Stary; and The United States’ Bread and Puppet Theatre and La Mamma Theatre. Among the prominent theatre artists who have participated there are: Sir John Gielgud, Vaclav Havel, Peter Brook, Daniel Day Lewis, Derek Jacobi, Heiner Muller and Mario Vargas Losa. We believe that performing among such distinguished international theatres will be an unparalleled educational opportunity for our students.

Our  production of Uncle Maroje, written by, “the Croatian Shakespeare,” is based on the new English translation and adaptation made specifically for this occasion by Dr. Roland Reed and Dr. Naum Panovski. This production will be, to our knowledge, the first production ever done of a play by Marin Drzic in the USA. Directed by Naum Panovski, internationally distinguished theatre director and the Director of our M.F.A. Directing Program, Unlce Maroje will include a team of internationally distinguished theatre artists such as Mr. Marin Gozze, a well known and internationally awarded set designer from Croatia, who will lead our set and lighting design team, and Ms. Smaranda Branescu, distinguished costume designer from Romania who has designed for renowned directors such as Liviu Cullei, Lucian Pintillei, Robert Wilson, and Libby Appel.

We will be grateful if you can join us and support our endeavor to learn from the best in theatre. Thank you for your generosity and help.

I am looking forward to hearing from you soon and to seeing you at our open rehearsal or during one of our productions of Uncle Maroje.

Sincerely Yours,

Naum Panovski, Director of ‘Uncle Maroje”
