JANUARY TO MAY 2006

The coordinator has let me know that they are specifically looking for actors in the westchester area, and that if there is an overwhelming response they will hold additional 'auditions' to accomodate.

The Hudson Valley Shakespeare Festival seeks teaching artists to join its Education Outreach program from mid-January through mid-May 2006. The actors hired for this position will join a company of six experienced teaching artists providing a Shakespeare arts education program now in its tenth year.

The program serves students in grades 5 to 12 (upper elementary through high school) and aims to make the works of William Shakespeare exciting and accessible through classroom workshops and performances. The program a 45-minute session conducted by a team of three teaching artists and includes a short performance of Shakespeare scenes followed by student audience participation activities.

The Outreach program is conducted at schools through the Hudson Valley region north of New York City. Travel to the performances from New York City and return is provided by the company. Average travel time from Manhattan to the schools is one hour and 30 minutes. Teaching artists who reside outside of New York City must arrange for their own travel.

The sessions take place during school hours (8:30 to 3:30). TAs may be scheduled for up to four 45-minute sessions per day. Scheduling is done in advance and is somewhat flexible to accommodate TAs availability and requests from schools. TAs can expect to work a minimum of two days per week.

TAs are paid a base of $150 per day for up to three 45-minute sessions. Additional compensation is provided for extended breaks between sessions and more than three sessions.

Interested applicants should have experience with the plays of William Shakespeare and experience working in theater for young audiences or as a theater teaching artist. Actors of color are strongly encouraged to apply. In particular, we are seeking an African-American actor to balance our cross-cultural casting for this spring.

Please send headshot/resume/cover letter by email only to sturner@hvshakespeare.org
Only applicants under serious consideration will be contacted. Selected finalists will be invited to attend an audition and interview the week of January 23rd at a Manhattan location. Depending on response, an additional audition may be held in Westchester for teaching artists who reside nearby.
