The recital by distinguished pianist Stefan Warzycki is being given in aid of the International Trust for Croatian Monuments, which was founded in 1991 under the auspices of the International Council on Monuments and Sites (ICOMOS UK) in response to damage and destruction of monuments of culture in Croatia caused by war. It became an independent charity in 1994 and the trustees are uerban Cantacuzino CBE, The Viscount Norwich, Peter Stormonth Darling, Sir Henry Njers Beresford-Peirse, John Beresford-Peirse and Jadranka Lady Beresford-Peirse.

The Trust's aim is to raise awareness of the rich cultural and artistic heritage of Croatia and to raise funds for the restoration and preservation of those sites that have become threatened by war or through neglect or lack of funding. It has supported the restoration of churches, cathedrals, museums, libraries and works of art. In particular, it has helped with the education and training of young conservators and restorers at institutions of excellence in Great Britain, which it considers its most important investment.

All of the music in this recital is for the left hand alone. Works include two by Johann Sebastian Bach (Brahms's superb arrangement of the famous Chaconne from the second partita for unaccompanied violin, along with Warzycki's own arrangement of the Chromatic Fantasia); Frank Bridge's Three Improvisations for the left hand; Dinu Lipatti's Sonatine pour la main gauche; studies for the left hand by Moritz Moszkowski; a selection of left- hand studies by Leopold Godowsky on the Op. 10 Etudes of Frederic Chopin; and the London premier of the Fifth Piano Sonata by the contemporary Czech composer Pavel Zemek Novak, commissioned by Stefan Warzycki.

Stefan Warzycki was born in Tokyo but grew up in the United States. Since graduating from the San Francisco Conservatory of Music, where he made his concerto debut with the San Francisco Symphony Orchestra, he has lived in London, where he also teaches piano. He has given recitals and concerto performances in prestigious London venues such as Wigmore Hall, at the Edinburgh Festival, and on tour in Europe, North and South America, Japan and SE Asia.

A few years ago Stefan's right hand fell victim to focal dystonia, a neurological condition which severely impairs control of the fingers, but his left hand is unaffected and - like eminent predecessors such as Paul Wittgenstein and Leon Fleisher - he has re-invented himself as a left-handed pianist, applying his same masterly musicianship to the select and technically challenging left-handed repertoire, which he has helped to expand by both commissioning new works from contemporary composers and making his own new left-hand arrangements of music from earlier times.
