Mario Hezonja declares for 2015 NBA Draft

Croatian shooting guard, Mario Hezonja, has decided to declare for the NBA Draft as his agent Arn Tellem confirmed on Thursday. The 20-year-old prospect is considered a lock to be drafted in the top 10. Currently of FC Barcelona in the ACB League in Spain, Mario is a shot creator both on and off ball that could contribute off the bench to an NBA team immediately next year due to experience in Spain.

The questions with him tend to be more attitude and team fit-based, as some scouts have wondered if he needs to be the focal point of an offense to be happy. Also, Hezonja’s not exactly one to lack any sort of confidence and modesty, as he’s said that if he played in college he’d “probably be the No. 1 pick.” Hezonja is ranked No. 8 on ESPN’s latest Big Board.

“I really love him,” one NBA scout told ESPN. “I love [Justise] Winslow, too, but I really think if this kid was in college we’d all be going crazy for him. He’s tough, he’s athletic, he shoots the s— out of it. And the kid just knows how to play. He’s going to be really, really good in the NBA. He’s the first wing on my board.”

Hezonja is a guy that has a pretty big range of possibilities. His mix of athleticism, size, and shooting ability could see him become an all-star. But he’ll also (even more so than other prospects) need to go to a team that is willing to be patient and let him grow through the pains of being a young NBA player. He could go anywhere from No. 5 to No. 12 overall on draft night, depending on how he works out and interviews with NBA teams.

Hezonja was named Most Valuable Player of the 2011 FIBA Europe Under-16 Championship, after leading his team with a double-double in the final, 21 points, 10 rebounds and 3 steals. Over the tournament, he averaged 20 points, 8.2 rebounds and 2.7 assists. He was part of the senior Croatian national basketball team at the 2014 FIBA World Cup.
