SLAVONIA
Slavonia...a
town that existed on the Red Creek Valley, Mississippi three generations ago.
This town was fed by a railroad from Wiggins and extended into the now known
community of Broom in the southeastern quarter of George County. The town of Slavonia
was settled by a group of Slavonians (Croatians) who were to have their own
lumber town. Many buildings, stores, etc. were erected at the railhead. Just
what happened to cause the collapse of the settlement is conjecture at this
time: Perhaps the lumber industry ate its way out of the area. Today the
remains of the town are buried in dense pine forests.
I
plan to explore the area and research where ever data can be found and may have
a good story at the time of the next publication.
