CROATIAN HERALDRY
By Adam S. Eterovich
FRANKOVICH--FRANKOVIC
Frankovich
means the son of Frank. It is a very common Croatian name and is found in all
parts of the Croatia. Variations of the name include Franich, Franicevich and
many others.
Flacius
Illyricus or Matia Vlacich-Frankovich was a thelogical professor in Germany
(1500 AD) during the Protestant
Reformation and was considered next in line to Martin Luther in the Lutheran
religion. A modern day American Frankovich is Mike Frankovich of Frankovich
Studios in Hollywood. I believe he was born in Arizona of a mining family.
Antonio
Frankovich arrived on the stagecoach at Virginia City, Nevada on December 3,
1869 on business from San Francisco. He was in the coffee saloon, fish and
fishing business and tried his luck at gold mining in Amador County,
California. He was an American citizen and a member of the Austrian Benevolent
Society and the Slavonic Illyric Benevolent Society (Org. 1857) of San
Francisco. John Frankovich was an oysterman and restauranteur in San Francisco
in the 1880’s while Steve Francovich was mining gold and silver during the
1870’s in the foothills of California and Nevada.
