BISKUPOVIC---BISKUPOVICH
Biskupovich
is found in great numbers in Dalmatia. Split and the Island of Brac have many
families. They are also found inland in Croatia proper.
One
branch of this clan came from the names Dragicevich, Krstulovich and Krstic.
They came to Dalmatia from Bosnia when the Turks conquered Bosnia.
Biskupovich's
settled quite early in New Orleans, Louisiana in the fishing business; others
came to California and settled in Sacramento and the fishing port of San Pedro.
The name means bishop. There probably was a bishop in the family. Marko
Biskupovich was the consul at Antofogasta, Chile many years ago. Biskupovich is
also found in South America. They were typical of the Dalmatian immigrants who
settled near the sea and chose fishing as a way of life.
