Po svojoj prirodi individualist, Trnski nikad nije bio slikar krda, nije tražio zaštitu ili elemozinu u ime bilo koje avangardne bratovštine. U hrvatskom je slikarstvu Trnski od početka bio enfant terrible, svojeglavi samotnik, prkosan i beskompromisan slikar s izraženom potrebom za neovisnošću i s nenarušivim pravom da bude i "u krivu" ako osjeti potrebu da zaista bude "kriv". Oduvijek je i u svakoj prilici bio nepopustljiv u obrani svoje vizije. Uostalom, upravo je to bilo ishodište njegova otpora nevjerojatnoj lakoći trendovskog iluzionizma.
Trnski je veliki virtuoz, izvrstan crtač, slikar koji zanatsku perfekciju "drži u malom prstu" i koji ne vidi nikakav razlog da to žrtvuje u ime bilo čije i bilo kakve površnosti, da se zbog tuđe nesposobnosti odrekne onog najdragocjenijeg u sebi - svoje slikarske nadarenosti.

An individualist, by nature, Trnski has never been one of the pack, never in need of being sheltered by some avant-garde brotherhood. In Croatian painting, Trnski has been an enfant terrible, from the very beginning, a wilful loner, a defiant painter, not malleable, with a pronounced need to be independent, with an indisputable right to “be wrong,” if and when he feels the need to, indeed, “be wrong.” At all times, a relentless defender of his own vision. After all, that is precisely where his resistance to an easy-going trend-setting illusionism stems from.
Trnski is a magnificent virtuoso, an exceptional sketcher, a perfectionist of his métier; he sees no reason to sacrifice that to any or anyone’s perfunctoriness, and to loose what is most valuable - his own painting giftedness.
