Janica Kostelic plans to compete in all five skiing disciplines

The Croatian, who won three gold medals at the Salt Lake City Games four years ago, has battled bad knees throughout her career. But on Tuesday, her official Web site said "if Janica will be in optimal form … her competing in all those disciplines shouldn't be doubtful."

The site said Kostelic made the decision after consulting with her father and coach, Ante Kostelic, and national team director Vedran Pavlek.

Kostelic won the slalom, giant slalom and combined in Salt Lake City to become only the third Alpine skier to win three golds at a single games Toni Sailer in 1956 and Jean-Claude Killy in 1968 are the others.

This season on the World Cup tour, Kostelic became only the second woman to win five different disciplines in a season. She won the slalom Sunday in Ofterschwang, Germany, while fighting the flu.

Besides defending her golds in the slalom, giant slalom and combined, Kostelic will also compete in the super-G and downhill.

I think slalom may be the hedrast event because the gates are coming at you so fast it is super easy to blow out or straddle. It is very hard to put two clean and fast runs together. And it is near impossible to be in contention with a mistake. Downhill is hard too because you have to know the line perfectly, find the right balance between aerodynamics and turn shape, be strong, and have the balls to charge! GS might be the toughest to win in right now because Ted is absolutely slaying. Super g is my best event because I don't have much weight to carry speed but I'm not great at snapping off quick turns in GS so it is a good balance. Probably the easiest. I would say slalom is the hedrast to be successful at but I think we both agree that downhill is by far the most fun!! I came to Beaver Creek for my first World Cup to watch and it was awesome to see you race after following your blog. Good luck with the rest of the season, hope it goes great!
