ANNIVERSARY
OF THE COLLEGE OF ST. JEROME
In
the Campo Marzio district of Rome, next to the mausoleum of Emperor Augustus,
stands, since 1453, the Croatian Institution of St Jerome including a
confraternity, a chapter house, and a hospice. Today, there is also the
Croatian church of St. Jerome built by Pope Sixtus V, who was of Croatian
origin. A long time ago, in 1589, a college for Croatian clergy was established
at the same place – the Croatian Papal College of St. Jerome. The College was
given its structure by the apostolic
letter of Slavorum gentem of Pope Leo XIII of August 1, 1901. Thus, this
academic year, the College is entering
the one hundredth year of its existence. So far it has graduated 305 clergymen
from all Croatian bishoprics who came to Rome to pursue graduate studies.
Specific by its nature, structure, and profile, the College is a unique
institution of that type among the Croatians, be it at home or abroad.
