C STREET- VIRGINIA CITY, NEVADA

The main thoroughfare and business street of Virginia City was C Street. The majority of saloons, coffee saloons, billiard halls, gambling halls and other forms of amusements were found on the street during the 1860’s and 1870’s Many food provision houses, groceries, and confection stores wee also located on C street.

The street was not unusually long, perhaps eight city blocks, in total distance. The street burned tot he ground several times.

What was surprising to the writer was the number of Pioneers from Croatia, Hercegovina and the Boka Kotor located on this one particular street from 1860 to 1885 during the height of the silver boom. Very few, if any, historians noted this fact and simply credited this era of the wildest west to the Irish and Anglo-Saxon. Another myth.

From available Business Directories and the Federal Census it can be stated with some reliability that the Croatian-Hercegovinan business community certainly outnumbered the Italian, Greek, and all other Europeans except the English, German, Irish, and general American.

The Croatian-Hercegovinan was a very definite part o the famous street on a commercial basis. his only problem was that he did not promote himself or his business but assimilated through marriage and social contact with the whole community.
