VUJEVIC---VUJEVICH
Vujevich
is found from the coastal area of Dalmatia to Slavonia in Croatia. This clan is
found in great numbers at Dobranje, Drum, Galovac, Komin, and Stikovo on the
coast of Dalmatia with smaller numbers at other places.
Arms
were granted to Gregor Vujevich in 1690 by King Leopold 1. Gregor was part of
the Backa Committee in the Vojvodina. Arms are in the Vojvodina and Budapest
Archives.
Many
of the Arms were granted for valor in battle, usually against the Turks as
Croatia was on the Military Frontier. The Vujevich Arms display a Turk’s head
on a sword.
The
American Vujevich’s were Anthony and John at New Orleans, Louisiana in 1918.
They probably were oystermen; Joseph Vujevich was a member of the Croatian
Sokols in 1912 in San Francisco, California while Chris Vujevich was a member
of the Croatian Fraternal Union in the goldmining region of Amador County,
California.
