TONKOVIC--TONKOVICH

 

The Tonkovich clan is found in Bunic, Drenov Bok, Dumaca, Generalski Stol, Imotski, Licko Lesce, Ostri Zid, Otok na Dobri, Prozor, Ramljani, Selisce Novo, Satornja, Svica, and in great numbers at Sinac, Vrelo Gacke, Zagreb, Zmijavci, all in Croatia.

Arms were granted on April 21, 1578 by king Rudolf to Martin and Mathew Tonkovich. The Arms were published in Zagreb and can be found in the Archives of Zagreb. A Turk’s head is displayed in the shield; probably for valor in battle.

Mathew Tonkovich was an oysterman in the Bayous of louisiana in the 1880’s and Anthony Tonkovich was a member of the Slavonian-Croatian Society in New Orleans.

Elia Tonkovich had a Coffee Saloon in San Francisco, California in the 1880’s and Mathew Tonkovich married Catherine Pirovich at the Croatian Church in San Francisco at the turn of the century.
