KRIZANIC-KRIZANICH-KRISANICH

Krizanich, pronounced Krizhanich, is found with many families in the Karlovac and Varazdin districts of Croatia. They are also located in all parts of Croatia. Kriz means cross or crucifix and also refers to a crossing, cruise and a crusader.

The Coat of Arms were granted in 1688 and are deposited in the state archives in Zagreb. This family left as refugees from the Turks and fled to Dalmatia.  Another grant to Krizanich was given in Karlovac for military service on the Croatian Military Frontier.

The root of the name Kriz is used extensively in Croatian names such as Krizmanich, Krizmanovich, Krizman, Krizaj. Krizan, Krizanec, Krizanovich, Krizek, Krizetich and Krizmarich.

Most Croatian names are readily understood by a CroatianEnglish dictionary.
