JURISIC - JURISICH

Jurisich pronounced Yureshich- probably comes from Juris meaning to attack or assault. The name was also Gjurisich. They  were a warrior clan from the Turkish wars  that lasted from the 1500's  to the 1800's.

This clan is quite large with families all over Croatia. They are concentrated at Bacevac, Biorine, Cerna, Obor, Selnica, Banska, Sitno Donje, Smorlovo, Srida, Sibenik, Zadar and Zagreb in Croatia.

Jurisich's were early Pioneers in Plaquemines Parish, Louisiana as fishermen of oysters in 1840-1880's. Ivan and Petar Jurisich were original member's of the Croatian Sokols in Califomia. Large numbers of Jurisich's migrated  to America in the 19th century.

Arms were granted to Nikola Jurisich by King Ferdinand on February 20. 1533. Nikola was born  1490 in Senj. These Arms have two swords in the shield and a Turk’s head on an arrow.
