CROATIAN HERALDRY
By Adam S Eterovich
GLAVICH---GLAVIC
Most
of the Glavich clan came from the Dubrovnik area in Dalmatia and from Istria.
The name is also found in other parts of Croatia. A simple explanation of
Glavich would be head or chief as an origin of the name.
Glavich
was granted a Coat of Arms in 1595 and a record is on file at the Zagreb Archives. The Coat of Arms has five
lions with gold and black as the colors.
Heraldic color codes indicate dots-gold; white-silver; black-black.
Private
Vincent Glavich was a Louisiana volunteer in Captain Cognevich's Company,
Confederate Army in 1861 and Pietro Glavich was a corporal in the same company.
Pietro later had a fruit business on Chartras Street in New Orleans in 1872.
Pietro
is also found mining gold as an American citizen at Sutter Creek, California.
Vincent is also found in California. Many
Croatian pioneers in America were first in the South and upon hearing of
the gold rush in California, moved West to make their fortunes. California
wine, vineyards, fruit orchards, saloons and fishing became the real fortune.
Sutter Creek, California, a goldmining center and site of the first Croatian
building in America in 1873 was a center of Glavich and other Croatians.
Andrea, Luka, John, Marko, Nikola and Pietro were all there.
