BULJAN CLAN
Mate
was born in the village of Podbablje Gornje near Imotski, Croatia. He came to
the US in 1968. Because he originated from a blacksmith family he was able to
all kinds of metal work. Upon his arrival in California he did many of them.
Slava was born in Podbablje as well. She arrived in the US in 1971, with their
children, Marija, Ivan, Ante and Mario. The beginning was difficult, but after
a little while they bought small nursing
units, and it started. They were able to give to their children good
education. All their children are educated and successful in business. They
live in San Mateo, California and are members of the Croatian parish in San
Jose. Ante and Nedjelka were born in Imotski. Ante came to America in 1971 and
Nedjeljka followed him six years later. They were married in our church and
their children, Ante, Michael and Christopher were baptized in the Croatian
church. Ante is a sculptor and he
created the baptistry in our church and the memorial to Sele. Mario was born in
Imotski and he has been in the United states since 1971. Anka (Sare) is from
Stedrica near Dubrovnik, she has been in the United States since 1988. Their
children, Marko, Anthony and Joseph were
born in Redwood City and baptized at the St. Mary of Assumption Croatian
church. Ivan was born in Podbabjje and Jelka in Grubine near Imotski. They met
and were married in Imotski in 1978. The family arrived in the United States
the same year. Our children, Michelle, Ivana and Matej received the sacraments
in our Croatian church that we have belonged to since our arrival. Svjetoslav
Olujic was born in Lovrec near Imotski and Marija Buljan in Podgabije. Marija
graduated in biology. In 1991 she
returned to Croatia and was Deputy
Minister for the Research and Technology. She received many awards,
especially dear to her is the award of a Guggenheim Research Fellowship for her
work on the abuse of women and children during the Homeland war in Croatia and
Bosnia and Herzegovina. Sveto and Marija live in San Mateo with their children,
Sveto and Mate.
