BARBARICH---BARBARIC

BARBARICH is most common to all parts of Croatia although the largest concentration of the name is found at Zatrazisce, Island of Hvar, Dalmatia in Croatia. The colors of this Coat of Arms include a silver shield with a gold lion.

George Barbarich was granted a Coat of Arms in 1581, probably for service in fighting the Turks. This Barbarich was related to the Horvat Family.

Pietro Barbarich, a private, served in Captain Cognevich's Company, Louisiana Militia Volunteers, Confederate Army of 1861. Pietro had a Coffee House in the French Market at 11 St. Philip St., New Orleans, Louisiana in 1857. His children, Anna and Peter, were baptized at St. Mary's Catholic Church at New Orleans in 1855; later his children married and baptized their children in the 1870's at the Holy Trinity Church in New Orleans. Gajetan Barbarich owned the ship, "Example," fishing out of New Orleans at a later date.

Stephen Barbarich from the Island of Hvar married Maria Kuljis from the Island of Vis in San Francisco, California at the Croatian Church of the Nativity at the turn of the century.

Barbarich’s have been in America for over six generations-Croatians pioneered coffee houses, saloons and fishing in America.
