March 17, 2002
Divided rivals vie to lead opposition
By Jeffrey T. Kuhner
THE WASHINGTON TIMES

The race for the leadership of Croatia's main opposition party has become a struggle between two candidates with different economic visions for the country.

Ivo Sanader, the current head of the Croatian Democratic Union (HDZ), and Ivica Pasalic, former adviser to the late President Franjo Tudjman who led the country's 1991 drive for independence from Yugoslavia, are engaged in a leadership contest to lead the center-right party in general elections that could be held as early as this summer.
The HDZ led Croatia into independence and ruled the country until it lost power to a center-left coalition in 2000 elections.
The popularity of the ruling coalition in Zagreb has plummeted recently in the wake of the country's economic crisis and soaring unemployment rate, which is now at 23 percent. Elected on a platform of economic reform and forging closer links with the West, the government led by Prime Minister Ivica Racan's Social Democratic Party has lost significant support and faces an increasingly frustrated electorate.
Nearly 2,000 HDZ delegates will elect the next party chief at a party congress on April 20-21. The winner will likely form the next government, since many opinion polls show the HDZ as the most popular party in Croatia. It won nationwide local elections last year.
Mr. Sanader, 49, is a Reaganite conservative who advocates a tax-cutting, pro-growth agenda.
In a speech at Georgetown University last Sunday, he touted the benefits of "Reaganomics" and vowed that if he should form the next government he would immediately "slash income and business taxes to stimulate economic growth and job creation."
He also has pledged to cut government spending, streamline the public bureaucracy and "battle corruption" in order to encourage foreign investment and entrepreneurship.
Mr. Pasalic, however, said in an interview that he champions a "social market economy" that seeks to combine free-market reforms with vigorous public spending on social programs for the unemployed and the poor.
"I also want to attract investment from the Croatian diaspora abroad — to give them a chance to do business in Croatia," the 41-year-old contender said.
A third candidate in the campaign, party Vice President Maja Freundelic, is not considered a strong factor in the race.
Both Mr. Sanader and Mr. Pasalic have said reversing the country's economic decline will be their top priority should the HDZ return to power. Both men also seek to obtain NATO and European Union membership for Croatia.
Tomislav Sunic, a leading writer on Croatian affairs, said Mr. Pasalic's main weakness is his suspected involvement in economic corruption during the Tudjman regime in the 1990s.
"There have been allegations that [Mr. Pasalic] had intimate knowledge and participated in some of the shady privatization measures that took place when the HDZ was in power," Mr. Sunic said. Mr. Pasalic has been virulently attacked by the liberal press in Zagreb even though no evidence has been found, he added.
"The public perception of Sanader is more favorable and that he is honest," he added.
Josko Celan, a political analyst at Slobodna Dalmacija, a Split-based newspaper, agrees with that assessment.
"Although Pasalic has leadership qualities that Sanader does not have," he said, "Pasalic will be attacked by the pro-government press in a general election campaign, and that is his greatest drawback."
"It will be a close contest. But everything points to Sanader winning this race," Mr. Sunic said.

Public TV in Croatia

During the transition process in Croatia following the first multiparty
elections in 1990, at which time a new state was established in
conditions of war, media freedom found itself at the brunt of an
autocratic regime.

Now, two years since the change in government, the general conclusion is
that heavy pressure on journalism which had marked the Tudjman era has
disappeared. However, it may also be concluded that almost all important
media-related problems from that era are still present - public
television is still a distant goal, legal regulations on the media are
still far below the desired European standards, the state is still the
owner of a large part of the media space.

Dear Editor:

Re: "Yugoslavia No More" (3/15/02), - Of all the nationalities that once
comprised former Yugoslavia, it will only be the Serbs who will feel
regrets at its demise. After all, it was the Serbs who ruthlessly dominated

Originally called "The Kingdom of Croats, Serbs and Slovenes" it was soon

As a bizarre footnote to history, Yugoslavia had its beginnings with a

» (E) Who says that love doesn't move mountains?
By Nenad N. Bach | Published 03/17/2002 | Humor And Wisdom | Unrated

Here is a beautiful and inspiring story behind one man's
relentless determination...and yes, based on love.

    HAPPY VALENTINE's, my friends !
   Asta

Op-ed
valentine for 2002 is gone but never too late for a love story.
nb

CORAL CASTLE

Located 2 miles north of Homestead, Florida, on U.S. Highway 1, stands Edward Leedskalnin's, obsession. It is wonderful, and magical, and it took 1100 tons of coral to build.

Edward Leedskalnin was born in 1887, into a farming family, in a small village near Riga, Latvia. As a young man of 26, he fell in love and became engaged to a lovely 16 year named Agnes Skuvst. However, Agnes decided that Ed was too poor and too old and she soon broke the engagement. Deeply hurt Ed left Latvia.

First he traveled to Western Europe where he wandered for several years. Eventually, he made his way to Canada and in 1920 to Washington State, USA where he worked in lumber camps as a logger.

Somewhere along the way Ed contracted tuberculosis and his doctor recommended a warmer climate. So Ed headed south - first to California, next to Texas to work on cattle drives, and finally to Florida. Once in the sunshine state, Ed encountered a couple near Florida City who offered him shelter and medical care.

After some time, Ed purchased an acre of land for twelve dollars in Florida City and it was there that he began to build a large, open-air structure to honor his lost love. Perhaps he hoped to win Agnes back, but by all accounts, after leaving Latvia, he never saw nor heard from her again.

When building, Ed's tools were handmade saws, chisels, chains, hoists, and hammers fashioned from wrecking yard junk. His transportation? An old bicycle without tires.

A slight man weighing only 100 pounds, Ed spent twenty years constructing large works of art, like the world's largest valentine - a heart weighing over 5000 lbs, and a giant rocking chair that rocks at the touch of one finger. He also built a large table made out of solid coral - in the shape of Florida. Driven by some unseen force, Ed made an enormous (working) sundial, which towers twenty-five feet in the air. Aligned to the North Star, the sundial is so accurate, it tells time within two minutes. The massive entrance to Ed's "Coral Castle" is made from a single coral block weighing nine tons! This mammoth slab balances so perfectly on its center of gravity, that a visitor can easily push it open with one finger. In fact, every piece in Ed's castle was made from using coral dug from the earth, all by this one man with a fourth-grade education.

In 1923 Edward Leedskalnin opened his home to the public, charging people a dime to take a tour of what was hidden behind an eight-foot wall of coral blocks. The money was used to support his modest lifestyle - he had no electricity and no town water. You can't help but wonder, how could this one slight man move the 25 ton (and heavier) pieces, not only once in Florida City, but twice? For when in 1936 the one acre site Ed owned was threatened to be crowded out by a planned subdivision, he decided to move. He purchased a 10 acre piece of land in Homestead and for the first and only time in his life, he hired some help - a tractor trailer and driver. However, Ed would not allow the driver to be present whenever the blocks were placed on the truck. Instead, single handedly, piece by piece, Ed moved the heavy chunks of coral. How the large monoliths were lifted onto the truck we can only guess, but no crane or other lifting device was used.

When asked how these large pieces were moved Ed is reported to have said, "I have discovered the secrets of the pyramids. I have found out how the Egyptians and the ancient builders in Peru, Yucatan, and Asia, with only primitive tools, raised and set in place blocks of stone weighing many tons." Looking at what this 100 pound, 5' 6" man accomplished, you have to believe him.

He never did reveal the secret of how he managed to move, lift and position, the massive coral blocks that make up the compound, although some witnesses say they saw him "...float coral blocks through the air like hydrogen balloons". Whatever the case, in 1951, at the age of 64, Ed took his knowledge with him to the grave. His only living relative, Harry, inherited the castle and later sold to a Chicago family. It has been listed on the National Register of Historic Places since 1984, and today, Coral Castle draws about 65,000 visitors a year...being a true monument of love, and invoking our awe and respect.

» (E) Lirica - A Traditional Musical Instrument
By Nenad N. Bach | Published 03/17/2002 | Education | Unrated

HRVATSKI ISELJENICKI ZBORNIK 2002.
CROATIAN EMIGRANT ALMANAC 2002
ANUARIO PARA LA EMIGRACION CROATA 2002

The Lirica - A Traditional Musical Instrument of the Croatian Adriatic

Among traditional Croatian musical instruments, an exceptional place is heldby a string instrument know in the Adriatic area as the lira, lirica or, inthe southern, Dubrovnik, area as the lijerica. It is a solo instrument whichmost often accompanies a dance, less frequently singing. This instrumentwas user by traditional performers in north-eastern Istria, on the northAdriatic islands (in particular on Losinj, Rab, Silba, and Olib), on all ofthe Dalmatian islands, around Makarska, in the Neretva valley, aroundDubrovnik, on the Peljesac peninsula, in the Zupa and the Konavli. ElsieDunin, an American student of ethnic music and dance, who is of Croatianorigin, mentions the lirica along with the poskocica dance as the only formof the informal traditional dance of Croatians in California. In the living musical tradition at the beginning of the 21st century, thelirica is in use in the Dubrovnik area, in the Konavli, on the Peljesac, andon the islands of Mljet and Lastovo. The playing of the lirica has died outon the other Dalmatian islands, but there are attempts to revive it. TheSchool of Folklore run by the Croatian Heritage Foundation (Hrvatska maticaiseljenika) is the place where, under the expert guidance of Professor VidoBagur one can learn to play the lirica. A festival of the lijericaperformers was held in Cavtat in November 2001. It was organized by afolklore group from Pridvorje. We believe that this traditional Croatianinstrument will continue to live in the hands of the youth which love tostrike it, "ring" it, and briskly dance to its tune.

» (H) HRVATSKA - NAJCISCA ZEMLJA SREDOZEMLJA?
By Nenad N. Bach | Published 03/15/2002 | Tourism | Unrated

Hrvatski informativni centar http://www.hic.hr/hrvatski/vijesti/

Zeljko Buksa, Vjesnik (www.vjesnik.hr), 12. veljace 2002.

HRVATSKA - NAJCISCA ZEMLJA SREDOZEMLJA?

okolis i lijepa priroda najveca vrijednost Hrvatske i njena najveca
komparativna prednost u sve ostrijoj borbi za raspodjelu primamljivog
svjetskog turistickog kolaca.

promidzbi Hrvatske. Jer, sudeci i prema izjavama stranih turista, prednosti
hrvatskog turizma nisu ni kvaliteta ni cijena usluga nego bas lijepa priroda
i cist okolis. Uostalom, to potvrdjuju i odgovori stranaca u anketama o

stanje u konkurentskim turistickim zemljama, mi te prednosti koristimo
prilicno sramezljivo.

svake turisticke sezone pokusava pretvoriti u nedostatak. Izmisljaju se
podaci o nepostojecoj nuklearki na Jadranu, jatima morskih pasa,
preuvelicavaju price o cvjetanju mora ili necem slicnom.

Stoga ce Hrvatskoj jako koristiti povoljni rezultati istrazivanja americkih
odrzavaju najvazniji turisticki sajmovi i rezerviraju smjestajni kapaciteti

dobila primjerenu prezentaciju u predstavljanju hrvatske turisticke ponude,
puno drze do zastite okolisa. Usto, Slovenija je u studiji americkih
znanstvenika svrstana znatno iza Hrvatske.

Medjunarodnom godinom ekoturizma.
pojacavanje marketinga i promocije ekoloskih ocuvanih odredista i proizvoda

u sklopu turistickog predstavljanja Hrvatske.

Z. B, Vjesnik (www.vjesnik.hr), 12. veljace 2002.

CISCA PROIZVODNJA SMANJUJE TROSKOVE POSLOVANJA I ZAGADJIVANJE OKOLISA

ZAGREB, 11. veljace - U ponedjeljak je u Ministarstvu gospodarstva zapocela
provedba projekta "Uvodjenje strategije cistije proizvodnje u nacionalno
gospodarstvo Hrvatske". Projekt zajednicki realiziraju Hrvatski centar za
ciscu proizvodnju i Norveski nacionalni institut za tehnologiju, uz podrsku
hrvatskih ministarstava gospodarstva i zastite okolisa.

sto vise konacnih proizvoda.

otvarajuci prvi trening norveski veleposlanik u Hrvatskoj Knut Toraasen.
ciscu proizvodnju.

Zamjenik ministra zastite okolisa i prostornog uredjenja Roland Zuvanic

potaknula pokretanje prvog programa cisce proizvodnje u Poljskoj, a
financijski je pomogla provodjenje slicnih projekata u 20 zemalja u istocnoj
Europi, Latinskoj Americi i Aziji.

JUGOISTOCNA EUROPA NAJOCUVANIJI DIO KONTINENTA

osigurati bez unistavanja okolisa.

SPLIT, Croatia, Feb 8 (Reuters) - What do you get when you take a 40-year-old former motorcycle champion with an adrenaline buzz and add two track runners and a rower, all from a Mediterranean city where it rarely snows?
Answer: The Croatian four-man bobsleigh team which has qualified against all odds for the Winter Olympics despite a lack of funds, training and experience.
"At first, everyone thought we were crazy," the team's pilot and oldest member Ivan Sola told Reuters in an interview after improvised training.
"But Split is a town where it snows every five years and then for about seven minutes. So everyone laughed at the idea of a bobsleigh team. But now we are having the last laugh, we are going to the Olympics," Sola said.
The four practise regularly at the soccer stadium owned by local club Hajduk Split.
The drill is invariably the same: they push a clinking, red, metal construction mounted on wheels, jump in and ride about 20 metres to the end of the race track beside the pitch.
Sola admits it is nowhere near the real thing.
"You pass the finish line all bruised up and breathless but with a big adrenaline rush, after speeding down the track at up to 150 kph," he said.
