As much an art form as a sport, it's something like volleyball on water, but with a much smaller ball, and, at its best, in the style of a football player taking a spectacular professional dive. Though there's much rivalry between areas, Split's Bačvice beach is considered to be the true home of the game which is ideally played with five players and a "bald" tennis ball.

A National Federation of Croatian Americans (NFCA) delegation of Steve Rukavina, Zvonko Labas, Joe Foley, and NFCA Fellow Jelena Rudela met with the newly approved U.S. Ambassador to Croatia, James Foley, at the U.S. State Department in Washington, D.C. on Tuesday September 1st. Cathy Westley, the State Department’s Croatian Desk Officer, also met with the NFCA delegation.

The ten-day cultural event will consist of two exhibitions representing current Croatian applied and fine arts, featuring over forty contemporary artists working in traditional and non-traditional media, such as ceramics, glass, metal, stone, textiles, unique jewelry, product design, paintings and more. The exhibitions will be in the heart of New York City @ Gallery MC from July 23rd - July 31st, 2009.

» James B. Foley is new U.S. Ambassador to Croatia

US President Barack Obama will nominate James B. Foley (left) as new US ambassador to Croatia. Foley's nomination must be approved by the US Senate. Foley, a career member of the Senior Foreign Service, will succeed Robert Bradtke, who is leaving in July. Bradtke has been ambassador since 2006.

Born in 1932 to a Croatian-Jewish family, Branko Lustig (left) began his film career in 1955 working on films like Fiddler on the Roof and The Tin Drum before landing a job on Meryl Streep's unforgettable "Sophie's Choice." He is the recipient of two Oscars, having won one for "Schindler's List" in 1993 and another for "Gladiator" in 2001.

"30 Rock" actor, stand up comedian, and World Champion, Judah Friedlander (left) is an outspoken fan of Croatian food. To which he was undoubtedly exposed to, by his Croatian mother. Describing the power of Croatian cuisine, he says: "I like pretty much all food, but eat that Croatian food, man, and you just feel the power in your veins."

It'll take you a while, and you'll doubtless need more fingers and toes than you are in possession of to keep count. One thing is for sure, The Penny Black Remedy are not a band that you'd be adding to the list of failures.

Đuro Janeković and his newly discovered photos of Zagreb from 1930s reveal the capital of Croatia in new light and atmosphere. He exhibited his photos in Vienna, München, Buenos Aires, London, Oslo, Stockholm,  Amsterdam, Debrecin, Prag, Varšava, and in Zagreb. An exhbition of his photos is organized at the Museum of Arts and Crafts in Zagreb until March 12 2009.

Šime Strikoman is the author of a series of unusual photos representing various aspects of Croatia. For example The Kutjevo Wine Cellars celebrate 777 years of existence, so he made a millenium photo. Equaly interesting are his photos related to the island of Pag, towns of Šibenik, Zadar, Biograd, Split, etc.
