» Martina Filjak playing an adventurous and demanding program in New York 2009

The Croatian pianist Martina Filjak spent her 31st birthday on Monday hard at work. She gave her New York recital debut at Zankel Hall, playing an adventurous and demanding program. It was part of Ms. Filjak's prize for winning the prestigious Cleveland International Piano Competition earlier in 2009.

  The 5th Festival of Croatian Music in Vienna, Austria, will take place from 5th Nov to 1st Dec 2009. Among many interesting musical events we are pleased to announce the concert by Zagreb Philharmony conducted by maestro Ivan Repušić on the left, with Martina Filjak on piano, to be held on 8th Nov 2009 in the famous Musikverein Grosser Saal, 19.30.

A National Federation of Croatian Americans (NFCA) delegation of Steve Rukavina, Zvonko Labas, Joe Foley, and NFCA Fellow Jelena Rudela met with the newly approved U.S. Ambassador to Croatia, James Foley, at the U.S. State Department in Washington, D.C. on Tuesday September 1st. Cathy Westley, the State Department’s Croatian Desk Officer, also met with the NFCA delegation.

US President Barack Obama will nominate James B. Foley (left) as new US ambassador to Croatia. Foley's nomination must be approved by the US Senate. Foley, a career member of the Senior Foreign Service, will succeed Robert Bradtke, who is leaving in July. Bradtke has been ambassador since 2006.

Born in 1932 to a Croatian-Jewish family, Branko Lustig (left) began his film career in 1955 working on films like Fiddler on the Roof and The Tin Drum before landing a job on Meryl Streep's unforgettable "Sophie's Choice." He is the recipient of two Oscars, having won one for "Schindler's List" in 1993 and another for "Gladiator" in 2001.
