When in the Course of human events it becomes necessary for one people to dissolve the political bands which have connected them with another, and to assume among the powers of the earth, the separate and equal station to which the Laws of Nature and of Nature's God entitle them, a decent
respect to the opinions of mankind requires that they should declare the causes which impel them to the separation.

We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.—That to secure these rights, Governments are instituted among Men, deriving their just
powers from the consent of the governed.—That whenever any Form of Government becomes destructive of these ends, it is the Right of the People to alter or to abolish it, and to institute new Government, laying its foundation on such principles and organizing its powers in such form, as to them shall seem most likely to effect their Safety and Happiness. He has refused his Assent to Laws, the most wholesome and necessary for the public good.
He has forbidden his Governors to pass Laws of immediate and pressing importance, unless suspended in their operation till his Assent should be obtained; and when so suspended, he has utterly neglected to attend to them. He has refused to pass other Laws for the accommodation of large districts of people, unless those people would relinquish the right of Representation in the Legislature, a right inestimable to them and formidable to tyrants only.

He has called together legislative bodies at places unusual, uncomfortable, and distant from the depository of their Public Records, for the sole purpose of fatiguing them into compliance with his measures. He has dissolved Representative Houses repeatedly, for opposing with manly firmness his invasions on the rights of the people.He has refused for a long time, after such dissolutions, to cause others to be elected; whereby the Legislative Powers, incapable of Annihilation, have

Promicem tradiciju u okrilju hrvatske kulture

Lidija Bajuk-Pecotic svestrana je umjetnica koja kroz svoje pjesnicko, književno i glazbeno stvaralaštvo promice ljepotu raznolikosti hrvatske tradicijske pjesme, mitova i legenda. Od godine 1998. djeluje kao profesionalna umjetnica nakon što je prestala raditi u školi kao razredna nastavnica i knjižnicarka. Dobitnica je mnogih glazbenih i književnih nagrada, medu kojima su Goran za mlade pjesnike 1991., zatim Zlatne plakete grada Cakovca 1998. za promicanje Medimurja u glazbi i književnosti, nagrade Josip Sever za zbirku pjesama Vucica, nagrade Fran Galovic za Kugu. Takoder je zapaženo njezino glazbeno djelovanje u kazalištu i na filmu. Nastupala je diljem Hrvatske, Europe, Kanade te u Nepalu, Tibetu i Kolumbiji.
* Rodeni ste u Medimurju, "cvetjem med dvemi vodami". Pod pritiskom urbanizacije, danas sve više nestaje pravo selo, bogato obicajima i tradicijom. Jeste li ga vi doživjeli ?
- Imala sam iznimnu srecu selo upoznati prije no što su se vratili njegovi gastarbajteri. Rijec je o Malom Mihaljevcu, jednom medimurskom zaselku, udaljenom od glavnih prometnica. U njemu sam upoznala život zadružne obitelji, panonsko tradicijsko graditeljstvo, domacu kuhinju, obicaje, miris domacih životinja i pokošene trave, pastirske igre, tajne šume, tamo sam prvi put okapala kukuruz i zobacila sijeno... To mi je iskustvo jedno od najdragocjenijih i najljepših. Zbog njega sam sklona tradiciji, duhovnosti, usmenoj predaji i prirodi. Ono mi pomaže u studiju etnologije i antropologije, zapravo zbog njega ponovno studiram.
* Uz narodne pjesme izvodite i vlastite. Do sada ste objavili šest zbirki, "Pipilotine pjesme" ove godine. U kojoj se formi lakše pjesnicki izražavate?
- Pišuci pjesme ne razmišljam o formi. Lakoca pisanja proizlazi iz nadahnuca i dubine osjecaja, uglavnom sjetnih. Sonet mi predstavlja izazov jer zahtijeva veliku usredotocenost, samodisciplinu, poznavanje jezika i glazbenu darovitost. Dobar sonet nije lako napisati. Dio vlastitih soneta sam uglazbila, pokušavajuci im vratiti njihovu prvotnu namjenu - da zazvone i ponesu ljepotom zvuka, glasa i misli.
* Uz Pipi, jedan od vama najdražih književnih likova iz djetinjstva je Winnetou. Je li vaš svjetonazor blizak indijanskome?
- O, da! Danas bih rekla da je moj pogled na svijet blizak prirodi, covjeku, nadahnucima, ljepoti, osjecajima, duhovnosti, požrtvovnosti, svemu obespravljenom, poniženom, zloupotrebljenom. Svjetonazor americkih domorodaca u djetinjstvu mi je, zahvaljujuci literaturi i filmu, bio bliskiji od svjetonazora ljudi u nedalekome selu. A tako su slicni! Nije se mnogo od tada promijenilo. Ne poznajemo se dovoljno, preziremo vlastito. Seosko je podcijenjeno, proglašeno nazadnim i primitivnim. A "obecani grad"? Što on nudi covjeku u konacnici, kad ga umori gužvom, lažnim blještavilom i agresivnim reklamama? Iz samoce i apatije ne proizlaze smisao i ljepota življenja.
* Etnoglazba je u inozemstvu vrlo prihvacena, dok je u Hrvatskoj još mnogo predrasuda prema vlastitoj tradiciji. Zbog cega je tomu tako?
- Mislim da je odmak od etnoglazbe prouzrocen politiziranjem svega što ima obilježje tradicijskoga. Osobno se bavim promicanjem tradicijskoga u suvremenome kontekstu i u okrilju hrvatske kulture. Tradicijska glazba kao etnoglazba tematizira toleranciju, prijateljstvo, suradnju, slobodu, humanost, zajedništvo u razlicitosti, pravo na izbor. Domoljublje nije ustaštvo i ne smije se s njime poistovjecivati. U protivnome, zloupotreba ljubavi prema rodnoj grudi, a svaki je covjek teritorijalan i ima pravo na takvu ljubav, imat ce dalekosežne i teške posljedice.
* Jedna ste od osnivaca suvremene hrvatske etnoscene. Po cemu se taj pristup bavljenja narodnom glazbom razlikuje od folkloraškoga i kudovskoga?
- Moja izvedba je naglašeno emotivna. Ne bavim se tradicijskom glazbom da bih se autisticki prisjecala prošlosti, nego da bih na pitanja sadašnjosti pokušala odgovoriti drevnim, univerzalnim pjesmama. Svi tradicijski napjevi svijeta u tomu su nalik jedni drugima, bliski su nam i razumljivi jer na jednostavan nacin pjevaju o arhetipskim, opceljudskim temama. Mislim da jedino oni sadrže prave mudrosti i odgovore na pitanja koja mnogi postavljaju, ali malobrojni odgovaraju jer su olako zaboravili. Veza s prošlošcu ima smisla samo ako je u kontekstu sadašnjosti i buducnosti. Kao što je i govoriti o sadašnjosti i buducnosti besmisleno, ako se odricemo prošlosti. Služenje suvremenim, odnosno starim glazbalima manje je bitno. To se odnosi na formalnu stranu izvedbe, no ona nije bitna za poniranje u misticni svijet sazvucja i njegove svevremenosti. Medutim, ne treba umanjivati znacaj KUD-ova koji su, iako konzervativni i stereotipni u pristupu, u mnogim sredinama jedina poveznica covjeka s vlastitim korijenima. A i to je bolje nego ništa.
* Clanica ste Društva hrvatskih književnika, a svoj dosadašnji književni rad posvetili ste "Kneji". Što je Kneja Lidiji Bajuk?
- Ona mi je utocište, smisao, vlastiti odraz u zrcalu, put koji slijedim, tajanstvena šuma u koju svracam kad mi je teško i kad sam sretna. Tamo mogu biti samo ako hocu ili se susresti sa svojim najboljim prijateljima, mitskim bicima iz naše tradicije, s vlastitom podsviješcu pretpostavljam. O vilama, pozoju, kaci, pesjaneku, strahi, mraku, vodenjaku, Babi Luci, Zelenom Jurju pisala sam i u Kneji (Mozaik knjiga, Zagreb, 1999.). Iako je knjiga objavljena i u sažetijem i ilustriranijem izdanju kao Kneja, vilinska šuma (Slon, Zagreb, 2001.), ona još nije dovršena. O Kneji cu pisati i pjevati dok sam živa. Ovogodišnje Osjecko ljeto otvorit ce se 29. lipnja njezinom premijerom na pozornici prema mojemu scenariju, u režiji Dubravke Car-
-Crnojevic i izvedbi Osjeckoga kazališta mladih. Razmišljam i o nastavku prve, nagradene Kneje (književnom nagradom Fran Galovic za najbolje djelo zavicajne tematike u 1999. god., op. a.). Hoce li se djeca ljudske Jane i mitskoga vodenjaka Vanceka snaci u sadašnjemu vremenu, sa svojim sposobnostima, mocima i zacudenim ocima boje Drave, cijega se podvodnoga carstva Vancek odrekao zbog ljubavi...

PORUKE SA PRVOG SENATA DOMOVINSKIH I IZVANDOMOVINSKIH PRIPADNIKA HRVATSKOG NARODA

 

Ostvarivanje punog jedinstva domovinske i iseljene Hrvatske smjernice su kojima treba ici hrvatska drzava ukoliko zeli izici iz velike moralne i gospodarske krize u kojoj se nalazi - zakljuceno je na Prvom Senatu hrvatske dijaspore u Porecu. Hrvatsko iseljenistvo kao najsenzibilniji dio nacionalnog bica svjesno je problema u kojima se drzava nalazi i zele biti sudionik njenog oporavka, a nakon toga i njenog prosperiteta. Imamo prekrasnu drzavu, sa obiljem prirodnih ljepota i bogatstava i ono sto nam treba prvenstveno je pamet koju vodi ljubav prema domovini (a ne interes stranog kapitala) i novac koji ce biti usmjeren u razvoj, a ne u potrosnju. Sve to ima upravo hrvatsko iseljenistvo koje je kao i 1991. godine spremno staviti sebe u ostvarivanje nacionalnog boljitka i opstojnosti hrvatske drzave. Na zalost, potezi hrvatske politike i drzavne vlasti spram iseljenistva jos uvijek pokazuju određenu rezervu buduci da nisu napravljene nuzne pretpostavke koje bi dovele do aktivnijeg i sveobuhvatnijeg ukljucivanja hrvatske dijaspore u nacionalno gospodarstvo. Iako sadasnja vlast pokazuje stanovitu volju i zelju da pokrene stvari s mrtve tocke u koju su zapale kriminalnom pretvorbom i zlouporabom upravo novca hrvatskog iseljenistva, jos uvijek se na horizontu broda koji pusta na sve strane, ne vidi se kopno. Ukratko, pesimizam je glavna karakteristika prosjecnog stanovnika Hrvatske koji jos uvijek ne zivi zivotom dostojnog covjeka. Pesimista, na zalost, nije sposoban za krupnije promjene, jer jednostavno nema vizije. Tu viziju ima hrvatska dijaspora, jer ona probleme sagledava u cijelosti i zna koje korake treba povuci kako bi se stvari promijenile. A sa njima i raspolozenje. Onog trenutka kada optimizam zamjeni pesimizam moci cemo reci da smo na putu da izađemo iz ovog ponora. Prvi Sabor hrvatske dijaspore jasno je i nedvosmisleno odredio smjernice kuda ici i koje poteze vuci kako bi se stvorile nuzne pretpostavke za sveobuhvatno angaziranje hrvatskog iseljenistva u gospodarske procese u zemlji. Ti zakljucci na zalost nisu realizirani, a na tu cinjenicu skrenuo je pozornost i Prvi Senat hrvatske dijaspore koji je ustvrdio da gotovo nista nije promijenjeno u odnosima prema hrvatskoj izvan domovinskoj zajednici koja se i dalje ignorira u politickom, moralnom a i svakom drugom pogledu. Stoga dizemo svoj glas i kazemo: Dosta!!! Mora se pod hitno zaustaviti rasprodaja obiteljskog srebra strancima, profitabilnih i nacionalno vaznih gospodarski subjekata kao sto su INA, HEP i sl. i konacno priznati hrvatska dijaspora kao cjeloviti i nedjeljivi dio nacionalnog bica. Moramo zastitit Hrvatsku od onih koji od nje, a ne za nju, zive. U tome pogledu imamo pravo ocekivati da ce ova Vlada konacno progledati i uvidjeti da hrvatsko iseljenistvo je logicana odgovor na pitanje kako dalje... Sa njim imamo buducnost, imamo snagu i imamo moc. Bez nje smo osuđeni sa suzanjstvo i sluzenje sumnjivom kapitalu koji nam kupuje sve ono sto se moze kupiti pretvarajuci nas u sluge u vlastitoj zemlji. Doista, u najmanju ruku je upitna buducnost drzave i drustva u kojem je pitanje sluzenja javnoj stvari i javnom dobru kroz sferu politike - pitanje osobnog interesa, a ne opceg. Drzava u kojoj se vise cijeni los zastupnik nego dobar gospodarstvenik - ozbiljno je bolesna. I sto je najgore, te cinjenice nije ni svjesna. Stvoren je ogroman birokratski aparat sa 426 opcina i 26 zupanija koji su postali sami sebi svrha. Gotovo kao srednjovjekovni feudi u kojem je pojedincima dobro, a narodu lose. Međutim, i ovo stanje u kojem se drzava nalazi nije jos uvijek komatozno ni neizljecivo. Treba samo imati dobru volju i skinuti sljepacke naocale, odbaciti stap i jednostavno - progledati. Za takvo sto nije nam potrebno cudo - potrebna nam je pamet. A nje imamo, samo je ne slusamo. I ukoliko se cvrsto prihvatimo svoje dijaspore, necemo ni posrtati, ni padati. Hodati cemo uspravno i sacuvati svoj osobni i nacionalni ponos.
U vise navrata ovaj Klub koji artikulira bice hrvatskog iseljenistva skretao je pozornost nositeljima drzavne vlasti na te cinjenice, ukazujuci na probleme i nudeci rjesenja. Sve u interesu jedine nam domovine Hrvatske. Taj glas se nije htio cuti, bio je utopljen u more vapajucih koji su pokusali reci - pokrenimo Hrvatsku. Ali, ne radimo na nacin da cemo je gurnuti niz strminu... Pomozimo joj onoliko koliko je volimo, koliko nam kao domovina i majka - treba. U tome pogledu ponovno navodimo prijedloge koje smo uputili Vladi i Saboru Republike Hrvatske kao nase viđenje koraka koje je potrebno napraviti da bi se - pokrenula Hrvatska. To su:

Teritorijalni preustroj Republike Hrvatske u kojem ce biti cetiri zupanije, a kriteriji za
dobivanje statusa grada odnosno opcine biti Europski, a ne u funkciji socijalnog
zbrinjavanja nezaposlenih kadrova po politickim kriterijima.
Da se sudstvo, policija, vojska i drzavna uprava oslobode politicke i stranacke pripadnosti. U tim sluzbama trebaju raditi profesionalci, a ne stranacki podobni poslusnici.
Da se u Hrvatskoj odvoji zakonodavna, sudska i izvrsna vlast te da ti stupovi vlasti funkcioniraju sukladno svojim ovlastima, na temelju Ustava i Zakona.
Da se donese drzavna strategija borbe protiv korupcije i organiziranog kriminala i da se u nju ukljuce najsposobniji i najkvalitetniji kadrovi. Mito i korupcija najvece su zlo drustva i kao takvi moraju biti i procijenjeni, a strategija i kadrovi moraju biti primjereni njenoj rasirenosti.
Da se obustavi prodaja nacionalnog bogatstva dok se ne donese novi Zakon o privatizaciji.
Da se donese Zakon o dijaspori po uzoru na Irsku i Izrael.
Da se o svim relevantnim događanjima u zemlji, a prvenstveno informacijama izvjescuje hrvatska izvan domovinska zajednica kroz sredstva informiranja koja ce biti dostupna svima (HTV, radio, internet i dr.). Neotuđivo je pravo hrvatskog covjeka na pravu i objektivnu informaciju o svim pitanjima koja se ticu RH-e (izuzev onih koji su proglaseni drzavnom tajnom).
Osigura sudjelovanje autenticnih pripadnika hrvatske dijaspore u Saboru RH-e na nacin da se 10% svih zastupnika bira iz redova iseljenistva.
Da se donese novi Zakon o privatizaciji kojim ce se građanima Hrvatske priznati pravo na nacionalno bogatstvo koje su oni stvorili.
Da se hrvatima iz domovine i inozemstva zakonski uredi pravo prvokupa kod prodaje odnosno privatizacije svih gospodarski subjekata (a poglavito onih od nacionalnog interesa) kako bismo nacionalno bogatstvo sacuvali u nasim rukama.
Da se donese Zakon kojim kriminal ( ako je napravljen u pretvorbi ) ne zastarijeva.
Da se donese generalni urbanisticki plan za cijelu RH-u, kao i za 4 zupanije koliko ih maksimalni treba biti.
Da se angaziraju strucne policijske i financijske sluzbe (kako nacionalne tako i međunarodne) da se otkriju putevi iznosenja novca iz zemlje i osiguraju pravne i druge pretpostavke da se taj novac vrati u zemlju.
Da se odrede komparativne prednosti Hrvatske ( eko-poljoprivreda, napredni vid zdravstvenog turizma i naglasena pomorska orijentacija drzave s posebnim osvrtom na brodogradnju i u tom pogledu naglasak na sportske tipove brodova.)
Da se donese strategija razvoja Hrvatske u prvih 20 godina i daljnjih 50 godina.
Da politika bude cast a ne sredstvo za ostvarenje pojedinacnih interesa.
Da moral i moralne norme budu osnovno mjerilo vrijednosti covjeka.


Molimo Hrvatsku Vladu da pokrene proces putem Vlade i Sabora Republike Hrvatske da se navedeni prijedlozi usvoje kao osnovni put kojim treba ici Hrvatska. Hrvatska vlast koja krene tim putem imat ce podrsku domovinske i iseljene Hrvatske. Imat ce moralnu i materijalnu pomoc te podrsku cjelokupnog Hrvatskog naroda i njihovih prijatelja u Hrvatskoj i u svijetu.

Ujedno koristimo prigodu te se zahvaljujemo svim hrvatskim rodoljubima svijeta koji iz raznoraznih razloga nisu mogli doci na Senat, a svojim prijedlozima i sugestijama su obogatili sadrzaj rada Senata. e Science behind the Segway

Balance Sensor Assembly (BSA)
The BSA, supplied by Silicon Sensing Systems, is an elegantly designed, extremely robust, and yet incredibly sensitive piece of equipment. This small cube, 3 inches on a side, is packed with five solid-state, vibrating-ring, angular-rate sensors ("gyroscopes") that use the Coriolis effect to measure rotation speed. These tiny rings are electromechanically vibrated in such a way that when they are rotated, a small force is generated that can be detected in the internal electronics of the sensor. Each "gyro" is placed at a unique angle that allows it to measure multiple directions. Segway's onboard computers constantly compare the data from all five gyros to determine if any of the five is supplying faulty data--in this condition, it can compensate and use data from the remaining sensors to continue balancing through a controlled safety shutdown. Two tilt sensors filled with an electrolyte fluid provide a gravity reference in the same way your inner ear does for your own sense of balance. The BSA is monitored by two independent microprocessors and is split into two independent halves for redundancy. Even the communication between sides is performed optically to avoid electrical faults on one side propagating to the other.


Motor
The Segway HT's motors are unique in a number of respects. Produced by Pacific Scientific, a division of Danaher, they are the highest-power motors for their size and weight ever put into mass production. Each motor is capable of maintaining a power output of 1.5 kilowatts--that's 2 horsepower! The motors use brushless servo technology, meaning there are no contacts to wear, arc, and reduce performance. The magnets are constructed of an incredibly powerful rare-earth material: neodymium-iron-boron. Each motor is constructed with two independent sets of windings, each driven by a separate board and motor. Under normal conditions, both sets of windings work in parallel, sharing the load. In the event of a failure, the motor is designed to instantly disable the faulty side and use the remaining winding to maintain control of the Segway HT until it can be brought to a stop. The motor is carefully balanced to operate up to 8,000 rpm, allowing it to produce very high power levels in a small package. Feedback from the motor back to the Segway HT is provided by redundant, noncontact analog hall sensors that sense the positions of magnets with no moving parts other than the motor shaft itself.


Gearbox
The Segway HT's gearbox, a joint effort between Axicon Technologies and Segway, is constructed more like a precision Swiss watch than a traditional gear drive from an automobile. A two-stage reduction system provides a 24:1 reduction, allowing the motor to operate at powerful, efficient speeds throughout the full range of speeds of the Segway HT. Each gear is cut to a helical profile, which creates a spiral engagement to minimize noise and increase the load capability of the gears. The number of teeth on each gear is chosen to produce noninteger gear ratios. This means that the teeth will mesh in a different location each revolution, maximizing the life of the gearbox. Our engineers were so obsessed with the details on the Segway HT that they designed the meshes in the gearbox to produce sound exactly two musical octaves apart--when the Segway HT moves, it makes music, not noise. The gearbox is pre-assembled and lubricated, and is designed to require no maintenance over the life of the Segway HT. It has been tested for thousands of miles under severe conditions

Wheel and Tire
Michelin was one of the earliest partners in the Segway HT design project. The tires on the Segway HT have been designed specifically for this product, using a unique tread compound (a silica-based compound instead of traditional carbon-based materials), giving enhanced traction and minimized marking on indoor floors, and a specially engineered tubeless construction that allows low pressure for comfort and traction while minimizing rolling resistance for long range.The tire is mounted on an equally unique wheel design: the wheel is constructed of a sophisticated engineering-grade thermoplastic chosen in partnership with GE Plastics. This composite material allows light weight and excellent durability, and actually reduces noise transmitted from the drive system. The wheel is molded around a forged steel hub, eliminating fasteners that can loosen over time. The attachment between this hub and the transmissions incorporates a unique (patent pending) taper and hex design, which allows a single nut to attach or remove the wheel while retaining the security of multiple-bolt systems more typically seen in conventional applications.


Batteries
The Segway HT uses twin NiMH battery packs, designed in partnership with SAFT (a division of Alcatel), running at a nominal 72 volts. These nickel-metal hydride cells deliver the highest power of any currently available chemistry, optimized to maintain the Segway HT's balance under severe conditions. These are not your cell phone batteries! Each pack consists of an array of high-capacity cells and a custom-designed circuit board that constantly monitors the temperature and voltage of the pack in multiple locations. This assembly is enclosed in another unique application of GE thermoplastics--the battery box is sealed using a vibration welding technique that makes the outside of the pack a single, continuous structure--sealed from moisture and strong enough to survive the most extreme tests our durability engineers could throw at it. The internal electronics in the battery incorporate "smart" charging--the customer need only plug the Segway HT into the wall and the battery will choose the appropriate charge rate based on temperature, voltage, and level of charge. The batteries will quick charge, then automatically transition into a balance and maintenance charge mode. The Segway HT customer does not need to worry about memory or timing their charges--just plug it in. Under normal operation, the Segway HT carefully monitors both batteries and automatically adjusts to drain the batteries evenly. In the unlikely event of a battery failure, the system is designed to use the second battery to operate the machine and allow it to continue balancing until it is brought to a safe stop.


Controller Boards
Two sophisticated controller boards from Delphi Electronics provide both brains and brawn for the system. Delphi Electronics was chosen as a partner based on their track record in the production of high-volume, high-quality automotive electronics for such demanding applications as airbag modules.Each board contains a Texas Instruments digital signal processor, monitoring the entire Segway HT system and checking 100 times per second for any faults or conditions that might require immediate response. It reads the information from the BSA to determine if the rider is leaning forward or backward, and instantly uses this information to deliver power from the batteries to the motors through a set of 12 high-power, high-voltage field-effect transistors (FETs). These calculations take place 100 times a second, and the motors are adjusted at up to 1,000 times per second, responding far more quickly than the human body is capable of perceiving. Although each board is capable of operating the Segway HT after a failure (each board, in fact, powers electrical circuits on both motors), under normal conditions they share the load.
 

Ancic rises from a ball-boy to becoming the next Ivanisevic

Just days after his adored countryman bowed out of the All England club and tennis, the likeable 20-year-old is bidding to emulate Ivanisevic's 2001 triumph here as he prepares to take on Britain's Tim Henman in the last eight.

And, rather than tiring of people drawing parallels between himself and Ivanisevic, for whom he used to be a ball boy, Ancic has just gotten used to it.

“It was great for all Croatians so I think not only me but (Ivo) Karlovic and (Ivan) Ljubicic and everybody can try to do the same.”

Ljubicic was knocked out in the first round by South African Wayne Ferreira this year.

But Karlovic, who upset defending champion Lleyton Hewitt in the opening round of 2003, made it through to the fourth round before bowing out to Roger Federer 6-3, 7-6 (7-3), 7-6 (7-5) on Monday.

It was the first time two Croatians had reached the round of 16 at a grand slam in the Open Era.

Ancic's place in the quarter-finals represents his best grand slam performance after he reached the round of 16 at last year's Australian Open.

And unseeded Ancic will be looking to build on his strong record against seeded players at Wimbledon.

On his Grand Slam debut, as a qualifier in 2002 at Wimbledon, he upset No7 seed Federer in the opening round.

Lanka, Zimbabwe, Croatia win global youth hockey marathon

New Delhi, July 3. (PTI): Sri Lanka in Asia along with Zimbabwe (Africa) and Croatia (Europe) have been selected as winners of the global youth hockey marathon held in May this year.

According to the International Hockey Federation, the three countries were declared winners yesterday by a jury comprising members of the FIH Working Group Youth and the FIH Youth Panel.

Fortyfive countries took part in the May 15-16 marathon, designed to stimulate interest in all aspects of the game, an FIH release said here today.

Tamara BOROS beat LEE Hyang Mi of Korea at the US Open

The top four seeds in the Women’s Singles event at the ITTF Pro Tour Killerspin Open in Chicago, KIM Kyung Ah of Korea, Tamara BOROS of Croatia, LIU Jia of Austria and LIA Jia Wei of Singapore all came through the second round unscathed on Friday 2 July 2004 and furthermore, they all won in impressive style, non of the quartet dropping a single game.

Top seed KIM Kyung Ah, ranked number six in the world proved too strong for Romania’a Adriana ZAMFIR. `What surprised me was how good her serve was,’ said ZAMFIR. `You don't usually expect that from a backspin player.’ KIM Kyung Ah won 11-7, 11-3, 11-9. 11-6. `I'd push, push, push, then topspin, then either smash or push again, what made it difficult is that she has a very good quick hit.’

Meanwhile, second seeded Tamarao BOROS beat LEE Hyang Mi of Korea 11-7, 11-6, 11-3, 11-3; third seeded LIU Jia defeated KWOK Fong Fong, from Hong Kong but now resident in Korea, 11-7, 11-8, 11-5, 11-4, whilst fourth seeded LI Jia Wei overcame Sayaka HIRANO of Japan, 11-2, 12-10, 11-6, 12-10.

Also safely through is Ruta BUDIENE-GARKAUSKAITE of Lithuania; a player who has developed a habit of beating higher ranked opposition on the ITTF Pro Tour this year; at the Greek Open she beat non other than the player currently ranked number three in the World, NIU Jianfeng of China.

In Chicago she once again beat higher ranked opposition; this time in the guise of Japan’s Ai FUJINUMA, she won 12-10, 11-8, 2-11, 5-11, 8-11, 12-10, 11-8. `I played her at the Greek Pro Tour, and won four-nil’, said BUDIENE-GARKAUSKAITE. `This time I didn't feel as good and made many simple mistakes, because she's left-handed, I played my backhand to her forehand effectively, and attacked her middle. I started most rallies with short balls, then attacked deep.’

The quarterfinal matches see KIM Kyung Ah versus Ruta BUDIENE-GARKAUSKAITE whilst Cornelia VAIDA plays LI Jia Wei; LIU Jia is in opposition to Viktoria PAVLOVICH and An KONISHI confronts Tamara BOROS.
