Croatian community in Romania is not large, but is stable with well-preserved traditions and language. It is estimated that the number of Croats in Romania number around 14,000, but likely the number is higher. They are a part of one of the oldest communities in the Croatian diaspora. They have lived there over 500 years.

The Carasova commune in Romania comprises 85% Croats



 
Officially the Croatian community in Romania is not large, but is stable with well-preserved traditions and language. It is estimated that the number of Croats in Romania number around 14,000, but likely the number is higher.

Croats around Ricice are a part of one of the oldest communities in the Croatian diaspora. They have lived there over 500 years and have had almost no contact in all that time with the mother country.

According to the 2002 census in Romania, the population of the Caraşova commune comprised 84.60% Croats, 4.96% others (presumably Krashovan), 4.47% Roma, 4.41% Romanians, etc. The population of Lupac commune comprises 93.38% Croats, 5.32% Romanians, etc. The 79.75% of population of Caraşova municipality and 93.45% of population of Lupac municipality declared to speak Croatian as mother tongue in 2002 census.

Najstarije mjesto u kojemu žive Hrvati u Rumunjskoj je Karaševo. Spominje se u zapisima 1299. g. , a u Geografskom rječniku Transilvanije, Coriolana Suciu 1333. g. U XVI vijeku Karaševo je dobilo status oppiduma (administrativnog centra ili gradića). Ostala mjesta u Karaš - Severinskoj županiji su u istom rječniku, u slijedećim godinama: 1562. g. - Jabalče , 1564. g. - Lupak, 1598. g. - Klokotič, 1690. g. - Ravnik, 1723. g. - Vodnik.
