Dr. Ante Čuvalo: Historical Dictionary of Bosnia and Herzegovina
By Nenad N. Bach | Published  09/15/2007 | Croatians in B&H , History | Unrated
New book on Bosnia and Herzegovina

At the end of August 2007, Scarecrow Press, a member of the Rowman & Littlefield Publishing Group, published the second and enlarged edition of Historical Dictionary of Bosnia and Herzegovina, written by dr. Ante Čuvalo, a recognized authority on the past and present of Bosnia and Herzegovina.

The publisher's announcement states the following about the book:

"Diversity has always been at the heart of Bosnia and Herzegovina's character; even its dual name and physical geography display a particular heterogeneity. The medieval Bosnian state never enjoyed lasting political and ideological unity as its feudal, regional, and religious rifts pulled at the country's seams. Furthermore, because of its location and by a quirk of history, three major world religious and cultural traditions (Catholicism, Islam, and Orthodoxy) became cohabitants in this small Balkan country. Recently, the rebirth of its statehood has been exceptionally bloody and its diversity has been shaken. Even eleven years after the guns were silenced, the country is still under the "benevolent" protection of the international community, whose officials are keeping the state-building process in perpetual suspense, with no final result in sight.

The second edition of the Historical Dictionary of Bosnia and Herzegovina sheds light on the uncertain situation Bosnia and Herzegovina faces, while providing essential background information. This is accomplished through a chronology, an introduction, a bibliography, and more than 300 cross-referenced dictionary entries on individual topics spanning Bosnia and Herzegovina's political, economic, religious, and social system along with short biographies on important figures."

Please note, that the first edition was the CHOICE Outstanding Academic Title for 1998.

It is a hard cover book and it has 504 pages.  List price is $99.00 and discount price $84.15.  It can be obtained from the author (708) 895-5531 e-mail cuvalo@gmail.com, from the publisher (800) 462-6420, bookstores, and book sellers on the web.

Ante Cuvalo currently teaches at Joliet Junior College. He has authored three books and many articles dealing with Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, and the former Yugoslavia.

Nova knjiga o Bosni i Herzegovini

Srednjovjekovna bosanska država nije nikada uživala trajno političko i ideološko jedinstvo. Nadalje, radi zemljopisnog smještaja i povijesnih hirova tri velike religijske i kulturne tradicije (katoličanstvo, islam i pravoslavlje) postali su sustanari u ovoj maloj balkanskoj zemlji.

Drugo izdanje Povijesnog rječnika Bosne i Hercegovine rasvijetljava neizvjesnosti s kojima se Bosna i Hercegovina sučeljeva, dok čitatelju daje osnovne podatke i spoznaje.

Historical Dictionaries of Europe

Editor(s): Jon Woronoff, Series Editor

The Historical Dictionary series on Europe contains two types of books: those reaching far back to the earliest periods of European history, which describe the peoples who created the kingdoms and territories that gradually emerged into its present state, and those dealing only with the modern state. Each historical dictionary includes a map, list of acronyms, chronology, bibliography and the core "dictionary," with hundreds of cross-referenced entries on persons, places, events, institutions and related political, economic, social, and cultural aspects. As with the other series, these books are written by well-known country specialists and are periodically updated to keep abreast of the times.

But not everything can be squeezed into the country volumes and those interested in Europe should also consult historical dictionaries in other series, such as Religions, Philosophies, and Movements (Catholicism, Lutheranism, etc.); Cities (Paris, London, etc.); International Organizations (European Community, European Organizations); Ancient Civilizations and Historical Eras (Napoleonic Era, Renaissance, Vikings, etc.); and War (British Civil Wars, Crimean War, etc.). It might also be mentioned that Turkey is included in the Europe series while Armenia is in the Asia series.
