Zagreb to host 19th Int'l Olympiad in Informatics

Dear friends!

We are honoured to host the 19th International Olympiad in Informatics in Croatia, and we are inviting everyone to attend. We will do our best to make IOI 2007 a memorable occasion and hope you will meet old friends and make new ones. Teams from all IOI countries have been invited to come to Croatia, and we will also try to get some new countries to join.

IOI - What is it?

The International Olympiad in Informatics (IOI) is one of the most prominent computer science competitions in the world. The Competition Tasks are of an algorithm nature, however the contestants have to show basic skills as problem analysis, design of the algorithm needed, data structures, as well as programming and testing of their solutions. The winners of the IOI belong, no doubt, to the best young computer scientists of the world.

The IOI is one of eight International Science Olympiads.
The other seven are: Mathematics IMO (since 1959), Physics IPhO (since 1967), Chemistry IChO (since 1968), Biology IBO (Since 1990), Astronomy IAO (since 1996), Geography IGEO (since 1996), and The International Linguistic Olympiad ILO (since 2003). All of them are open to High School students, younger than 20 years of age.

Each country participates at the IOI with a National Delegation, consisting of four Contestants, headed by a Delegation Leader and a Deputy Leader.

A Contestant is a student who was enrolled at a school for secondary education, in the Country they are representing, during the period September to December 2006, and is not older than twenty years on the 1st of July 2007.

International Olympiad in Informatics in Zagreb

International Olympiad in Informatics will take place in Zagreb, with the 90 best young students in the world participating.

The 19th International Olympiad in Informatics (IOI) takes place in Zagreb between August 16 and 22, with the best students from 90 countries worldwide participating. This is one of the most difficult as well as best competitions in the world.

The tasks in the competition are related to algorhythms, but the students will have to show their skills at solving analysis problems, algorhythm design, data structure and they will have to create programs and test them.

The International Olympiad in Informatics is one of the eight competitions of the International Science Olympiads. Students under the age of 20 are eligible to compete.

All other informatics enthusiasts will be able to join in the competition online an hour after the real competition begins. The tasks given online will be similar to those that the students at the Olympiad will be solving and they will last for five hours for the first two days of the competition.

The Olympiad is organized by the Croatian Informatics Clubs Association and the formal opening will take place at the Zagreb Fair on August 16, with 400 computers in the pavilion 8A.

UNESCO prompted the launch of the Olympiad in 1987 and, today, it is supported in many countries and it is a great honour to host it. Croatian President Stjepan Mesic is the main patron of this year's Olympiad and those involved in the project also include the Ministry of Science, Education and Sports and the City of Zagreb.

Aug. 13 (Xinhua) -- The 19th International Olympiad in Informatics will be held in the Croatian capital Zagreb starting this week, gathering nearly 300 best students from 77 countries, organizers said in Zagreb on Monday.

A total of 297 competitors and more than 500 participants will join the event to be held on August 16-21 under the auspices of Croatian President Stjepan Mesic, said Alen Spiegl, president of the Croatian Informatics Clubs Association which organized the event.

This is the first time Croatia is hosting the event, which is an annual, world-wide computer science competition, with high school students solving problems in a given program language, the Croatian news agency HINA reported.

The first International Olympiad in Informatics, which was proposed by the UNESCO, was held in Bulgaria's Pravetz in May 1989with only 13 countries competing.

Each team could be represented by four students under the age of 20. The main purpose of the event is to encourage interest in information competence and technology and foster friendship among students from diverse cultures.
