The 19th International Olympiad in Informatics (IOI) takes place in Zagreb between August 16 and 22, with the best students from 90 countries worldwide participating. This is one of the most difficult as well as best competitions in the world. The tasks in the competition are related to algorhythms, but the students will have to show their skills at solving analysis problems, algorhythm design, data structure and they will have to create programs and test them. The International Olympiad in Informatics is one of the eight competitions of the International Science Olympiads. Students under the age of 20 are eligible to compete. All other informatics enthusiasts will be able to join in the competition online an hour after the real competition begins. The tasks given online will be similar to those that the students at the Olympiad will be solving and they will last for five hours for the first two days of the competition. The Olympiad is organized by the Croatian Informatics Clubs Association and the formal opening will take place at the Zagreb Fair on August 16, with 400 computers in the pavilion 8A. UNESCO prompted the launch of the Olympiad in 1987 and, today, it is supported in many countries and it is a great honour to host it. Croatian President Stjepan Mesic is the main patron of this year's Olympiad and those involved in the project also include the Ministry of Science, Education and Sports and the City of Zagreb. A total of 297 competitors and more than 500 participants will join the event to be held on August 16-21 under the auspices of Croatian President Stjepan Mesic, said Alen Spiegl, president of the Croatian Informatics Clubs Association which organized the event. This is the first time Croatia is hosting the event, which is an annual, world-wide computer science competition, with high school students solving problems in a given program language, the Croatian news agency HINA reported. The first International Olympiad in Informatics, which was proposed by the UNESCO, was held in Bulgaria's Pravetz in May 1989with only 13 countries competing. Each team could be represented by four students under the age of 20. The main purpose of the event is to encourage interest in information competence and technology and foster friendship among students from diverse cultures. |
