Firsthand account of the struggle for Croatian independence
American edition of Lovers & Madmen: A True Story of Passion, has been Released

Without excuses, Julienne shares a rare perspective that may hold the key to understanding the minds of modern terrorists and insurgents.

On June 12, Gray Sunshine Publishing will release the American edition of Lovers & Madmen: A True Story of Passion, Politics, and Air Piracy, by native Oregonian Julienne Eden Busic. Julienne, along with her husband Zvonko Busic, was sentenced in 1976 to life imprisonment for "air piracy resulting in death," with parole eligibility after eight years. Thirteen years later she was finally granted parole, as were three other Croatian dissidents involved in the hijacking of TWA flight 355. Zvonko remains in prison, over thirty years later, despite the trial judge's recommendation that he be released after ten.

What drives groups and individuals to these and other radical actions, and how can they be prevented? These are questions that have taken on a much greater significance since the events of 9-11, and can be answered, at least in part... by Julienne Busic's personal memoir. Their actions-like so  many others during the turbulent '60s and '70s-were committed out of  idealism as well as desperation over the widespread abuses, human rights violations, and assassinations of Croatian dissidents during the former Yugoslav dictatorship. What was intended to be a nonviolent effort to force world media attention on these abuses led ultimately to tragedy: the  unintended death of one New York City police officer and injury to three others.

Since her parole, Julienne Busic has also lectured and written on issues  relating to terrorism, security, and law enforcement in order to share her experiences with professionals and government officials. She continues to lobby for her husband, Zvonko's, release and return to the now independent Republic of Croatia, the homeland for which he sacrificed his freedom over three decades ago.

Lovers & Madmen is a chronicle of their love and commitment to each other as well as to the ideal of Croatian independence, and the sacrifices they made to defend both. Julienne resides in the Republic of Croatia for the remainder of the year, but she is available for interviews by e-mail, phone, and satellite conferencing. If you would like more information about Lovers & Madmen, or to schedule an interview with Julienne, please don't hesitate to contact Gray Sunshine Publishing.
