Maja Kovacek Receives First Career MWC Player of the Week Honor

 

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - UNM freshman tennis player Maja Kovacek has received the MWC's Player of the Week honor after recording a 2-0 singles record this past weekend in Boise, Idaho and going 1-1 in doubles with partner Tjasa Suvak against No. 57 Boise State and No. 40 Washington State. The honor is the first of Kovacek's career and the first for the UNM women's tennis team this season.

On Friday, Feb. 14 Kovacek took to competition against Boise State's No. 1 seeded player and No. 74 nationally ranked, Renate Stoop. The freshman soundly beat Stoop in two sets, 6-3, 7-6. The same day she and partner Tjasa Suvak beat the Broncos' No. 5 regionally ranked duo of Jemima Hayward and Erin Polowski, 8-6.

Saturday, Kovacek faced WSU's Orsolya Sallai who was playing at the Cougars' No. 1 spot. The Pula, Croatia native played three sets against Sallai before settling the score in her favor at 6-4, 3-6, 6-2.

Kovacek's singles record stands at 14-2 overall (3-1 dual). In doubles she and Suvak have compiled a 9-4 record (2-2 dual).

UNM is currently 2-2 in spring play and has earned a No. 65 national ranking. The Lobos spring into action this Friday, Feb. 21 when they take on Denver at 5 p.m. at the Lobo Tennis Club. They return to the courts on Sunday, Feb. 23 when they play No. 46 Kansas.
