Publisher served his country, students
The Pat McKeand era is drawing to a close at The Sagamore. Pat has served 11 years as publisher of the award-winning student newspaper at IUPUI. The publisher establishes the business practices of The Sagamore and advises the student editorial staff. In the independent student press model that we have established, it is the student editors who decide the content of the paper.
Pat is beloved by all who come to know him well. He is a treasure trove of knowledge that benefits his students and Sagamore staff. As an undergraduate, he served as editor of the Indiana Daily Student. Pat was editor of The Anderson Herald soon after graduating from IU. He taught the editor’s course at the Defense Information School at Fort Benjamin Harrison. And for the last 11 years, he taught journalism at IUPUI.
His service to his country in Vietnam as an Army officer exposed him to Agent Orange which has led to his recent 100 percent disability and his retirement from his position as publisher. I want to publicly thank Pat for his service to his country. Too many vets, Pat included, were never properly recognized for their service.
Pat’s professional honors are many but I want to highlight some honors that were particular to his role as publisher and the campus in general. In 1998 Pat received the Distinguished Four-Year Newspaper Adviser Award from the national College Media Adviser’s organization. Pat received the 1997-1998 Howard G. Schaller Award, selected from student nominations, recognizing the education needs and interests of adult students at IUPUI. The Glenn W. Irwin Experience Excellence Recognition Award honored Pat for his service on the IUPUI campus in Indianapolis, 1993-1997, as well as at the University of Zagreb in Croatia, as the publisher of The IUPUI Sagamore student newspaper and as adviser to PULS Magazine in Croatia. PULS Magazine became the first independent publication produced in that country since before World War II, thanks to funding from the International Media Fund and the Freedom Forum and Pat was instrumental in training University of Zagreb students in desktop publishing skills and publication design skills.
For me, Pat is much more than a fine colleague, he is a personal friend. His commitment to diversity and his integrity is a model for us all. Our office will miss the ear-to-ear grin and Pat’s own brand of outrageous humor that has kept us entertained on a daily basis. We hope his retirement travels will not keep him away from us for very long.
Thank you, Pat, for all you have done for your country, your students, Sagamore staff and the campus.
