In 1999, choreographer Yoshiko Chuma went to Sarajevo with The
School of Hard Knocks, the collective of modern dance
choreographers and artists she directs. While there, they
performed "Footprints of War" at the Sarajevo International
Theater Festival. That was the easy part. Getting the set from
Sarajevo to New York for performances scheduled at the Joyce
was a two-and-a-half month ordeal of emails and
miscommunications that is the subject of her newest piece,
"Pi=3.14: Hiroshima-New York-Belgrade-New York-Sarajevo-New
York-Kabul."
Chuma, who says the title represents "endless, continuous
circles of life and war," has put together spoken word and
choreography into this work that pulls together themes of war,
displacement and Chuma's own childhood in postwar Japan. The
performers each have experiences with war, such as Tea Alagic,
who is from Mostar, a city in Bosnia and Herzergovina; Ivan
Talijancic, a Croatian-born actor, Jim DiBiasio, an American
actor who has experienced three wars, and Wazma Osman, an
Afghan woman who walked over the Pakistani border to freedom
