Iva Gersic Named MWC Women's Tennis Player Of The Week

This is New Mexico's second weekly honor for the 2006 season

Colorado Springs, Colo. - Junior Iva Gersic was named Mountain West Conference Player of the Week announced yesterday by the league office yesterday Feb. 23. This is the second time a Lobo has received this award, the first being Ola Abou-Zekry Feb. 16.

Gersic, a native of Koprivnica, Croatia, helped the No. 38 Lobos to victories against Oklahoma State University and rival New Mexico State University. On Friday Feb. 17, the 3rd ranked duo of Gersic and Maja Kovacek defeated NMSU 8-4. At the No. 2 singles spot she defeated NMSU's Edine van Beusekom (6-2, 6-2).

Saturday Feb. 18, the 3rd ranked duo was the only team to defeat OSU in doubles action with an 8-3 victory. Gersic rallied her team in singles play to help New Mexico come back and win five of the six singles points. She played at the No. 1 singles spot defeating OSU's Iryna Tkachenko (6-3, 5-7, 6-4).

New Mexico ended the weekend defeating NMSU 6-1 and OSU 5-2 giving them six consecutive wins.

Finished the season with an overall singles record of 29-5 and a doubles record of 33-8...voted "Most Valuable Player" for having a .853 winning percentage in singles and a .805 winning percentage in doubles...was named MWC Co-Player of the Year with Maja Kovacek...made all-MWC team selections for singles and doubles...was an NCAA participant in the doubles portion with Kovacek for the first time in her collegiate career... finished the season No. 75 in the nation as a singles player, No. 12 in the nation for doubles, No. 5 in the Central Region for singles and No. 1 in the Central Region for doubles...was a 2005 academic all-MWC honoree...(Fall 2004): Received a preseason national ranking of No. 62 in singles and No. 11 in doubles with partner Maja Kovacek...advanced past three qualifying rounds to become the first UNM women's tennis player to make it to the main singles draw at the ColemanVision Championships in Albuquerque...was part of the first doubles team in UNM tennis history to be invited to compete in the main doubles draw at the ITA/Riviera All-American Championships...played at the ITA National Individual Indoor Championships in doubles with Kovacek...made it to the singles semifinals at the Wilson/ITA Central Region Championships and the quarterfinals in doubles play...finished the fall season 11-2 in singles and 13-3 in doubles with Kovacek ...earned No. 1 ranking in doubles and No. 4 ranking in singles for the Central Region.

2003-04 - Freshman Season

Standout newcomer for UNM ...tied for first on the team for most singles wins ...finished season with an overall singles record of 28-8 ...competed mainly at the No. 2 singles spot ...compiled a doubles record of 33-4 at the No. 2 position with teammate Maria Ruiz-Fabrega ... broke the record for most combined wins in one year with 61 ...ended the season at No. 111 in the nation for singles ...ranked No. 7 in the Central Region for singles and No. 9 in the region for doubles with Ruiz-Fabrega ...was awarded MWC Player of the Week two times (January 29 and April 7) ...made the all-MWC team selection for singles and doubles ...earned all-MWC academic honors.
