Meeting at the University of Zadar

50 years of the textile study at the University of Zagreb and 20 years of the Faculty of Textile Technology

During 2011 the Faculty of Textile Technology celebrated its double anniversary: 50 years of the textile study at the University of Zagreb and 20 years of the Faculty of Textile Technology as a constituent unit of the University of Zagreb.

The Faculty of Textile Technology of the University of Zagreb is the only scientific educational institution of this kind in the Republic of Croatia, and it is also a reputable institution within the framework of international cooperation. The Faculty is a member of renowned international associations with which it maintains successful cooperation: AUTEX (Association of Universities for Textiles), DAAAM International (The Danube Association for Automation & Manufacturing), The Textile Institute Manchester (GB), CEEPUS (Central European Exchange Programme for University Studies), IFKT (International Federation of Knitting Technologists), SDC (The Society of Dyers and Colourists), AATCC (American Association of Textile Chemists and Colorists).

Basic guidelines for the development of the Faculty are primarily related to the continuous improvement of curricula and the scientific and research work in national and international projects. Also, the Faculty fosters and develops a long-standing successful cooperation with economy.

In the last decade, as part of development strategies, a significant increase in teaching and working space was achieved, the planned procurement of modern capital and research equipment was realized and, being also very important, the number of junior researchers and assistants as well as scientific and teaching staff was significantly increased.

Since 2005 university study programs of Textile Technology and Engineering and Textile and Fashion Design, and professional study of Textile, Clothing and Footwear Technology have been performed by the Faculty. The university study programs of Textile Technology are performed in line with the Bologna process at three levels: undergraduate, graduate and doctoral and specialist studies. The study programs of all studies of the Faculty of Textile Technology are based on current scientific knowledge of textiles and textile technology, as well as on new developments and keeping track with trends in fashion design worldwide and the need to reaffirm and preserve autochthonous Croatian fashion statements.

The postgraduate doctoral study of Textile Science and Technology is based on research in the field of textile technology, materials science, textile chemistry and technology, and science in the field of garment technology.

At the Faculty approximately 1,200 students are studying, and 25 full professors, 14 associate professors, 11 assistant professors, 47 assistants and 12 lecturers are employed as the teaching staff of the Faculty. The Faculty has approximately 8,000 m˛ workspace for teaching and research purposes.

In the past 50 years of university education in textiles, the academic degree of bachelors of science was awarded to 972 students, while 73 postgraduate students were awarded their master's degree, and 38 postgraduate students were awarded their PhD degree. Scientific research and teaching activities are organized within seven departments as organizational units of the Faculty.

Leading scientists of our Faculty are the heads of 16 scientific research national projects and three programs in the field of textile chemistry engineering, clothing engineering and textile mechanical technology.

Among numerous FP7 projects, TTF takes part as the leading partner of the project FP7-REGPOT-2008-1: Unlocking the Croatian Textile Research Potentials (T-Pot, and as a partner in the project: FP7-SME-2007-2: Sustainable Measures for Industrial Laundry Expansion Strategies (SMILES). The Faculty is also a partner in another great FP7 project: One – shot Manufacturing on large scale of 3D up graded panels and stiffeners for lightweight thermoplastic textile composite structures (MAPICC 3D) in cooperation with 23 European faculties and institutions.

Throughout more than a decade 17 bilateral projects have been carried out by eminent scientific and professional organizations from the world of textile (Austria, Belgium, Hungary, Slovenia, Great Britain and Serbia).

About the City of Zadar

Zadar is an ancient city, built in the center of the Croatian Adriatic, full of historical and cultural monuments. It is three thousand years old, a city of old, tumultuous and dynamic history, often destructed, looted, devastated, every time emerging from the ruins stronger, richer and more beautiful. Zadar appeared for the first time in history in the 4th century B.C. as a settlement of the Illyrian tribe of Liburnians.

The Zadar peninsula still preserves very old network of narrow and charming city streets, as well as a Roman forum dating back to the first century AD. The pre-Romanesque Church of St. Donat dates back to the ninth century, and it is certainly Zadar's most famous spot.

Throughout history, Zadar was the centre of key Croatian and Dalmatian cultural events: the establishment of the first Croatian university (1396), the writing of the first Croatian novel (1536) and the publication of the first Croatian newspaper. The famous permanent exhibition of sacral art and the traditional St. Donat Musical Evenings represent only a small part of numerous cultural events that Zadar offers to its visitors.
