(E) Tin Ujevic was a friend of Modigliani

ÂTin Ujevic was a friend of ModiglianiDear Sir or Madame,I am currently researching a project on Jeanne HÃbuterne, the companion of the Italian artist Modigliani; I would like to approach the subject from a different angle to that which is usual in studies of the period, as I feel that although Jeanne has been extensively written about in biographies of Modigliani there is more to say about her as a person and as an artist, and that there is information still to be uncovered which will change the perspective of that already available. To this end, my intention is to try and locate archival information for, and/or contact the relatives of, as many as possible of the artistâs community in Montparnasse from around 1913 up to circa 1930 in the hope that details, even word of mouth, might become available. I have been informed that the writer Tin Ujevic was a friend of Modigliani and Jeanne; I would therefore be very grateful if you could please advise me how I might contact the person or institutions which hold his archive material. I am very interested in how Jeanne and Modigliani were perceived within the community and anecdotes involving them that were current both during their lifetime and after their deaths, and so I would also be very grateful for any advice you could give me regarding the possibility of locating relatives or close associates of Mr. Ujevic in the hope that they might have recollections of conversations with him about the subject of my research, and about his time in Paris. I would also very much appreciate any information you are able to give me regarding other Croatian writers, artists, musicians or composers who were resident in Paris during the relevant period (1910-1920)Thank you so much in advance for taking the time to read this email, and I hope that you will be able to help me.Yours sincerely,Sara Cinjarevicsara_cinjarevic@yahoo.co.ukÂ

(H) Sto vise proucavam Teslu, sve mi izgleda veci - molim pronaci clanke

U rujnu, a posebno listopadu sam nekako spontano prestao raditi na novinarski nacin, vec sam postao dio postrojbi s kojima sam isao u neposredne akcije. Zato sam odlucio istraziti sve sto mogu, doci do svih dostupnih cinjenica i ispraviti tu uzasnu gomilu krivotvorina. NEGO IZRAVNO IZ CASOPISA "ELECTRICAL EXPERIMENTER" 1919.Clanci nose sljedece naslove:1. February 1919.....My Early Life2. March 1919..........My first efforts in Invention3. April 1919............My later Endeavors (The discovery of the rotating magmetic Field)4. May 1919.............The Discovery of Tesla Coil and Transformer5. June 1919.............The Magnifying Transmitter6. Zapisnik s Dodjele Edisonove medalje, AIEE, 18. 5. 1917, Smithsonian Institution, Washington D.C. 205606. Kad vec spominjem Smithsonian, napominjem a u njoj postoji Division of Electricity and Nuclear Energy, Swezey Collection, Reference Section of the Institution. Swezey je imao svasta o Tesli. Mozda se tamo nadju i ugodna iznenadjenja.Eto to je sve sto me muci. Zelim Vam puno uspjeha i zadovoljstva i u poslu i privatnoPozdravljam Vas sa stovanjem Mario Filipi mario.filipi@zg.t-com.hr Â

ÂCroatian refugees sent from Croatia to El ShatÂI have a dear friend who was one of the many Croatian refugees sent from Croatia to El Shat, Egypt during WWII. She has photos and memorabilia from her time there, along with vivid recollections. She is deeply grateful for the care and comfort they were afforded in their years there. She remembers that a Croatian-American, from Chicago, had visited the camp and filmed a documentary, and wondered if anyone out there might know what became of it. He was a radio broadcaster in Chicago and his surname was Marcan (Marchan) or something close to it.Does anyone know whether a book was ever published on the subject of these years Croatians spent in El Shat. I find it fascinating and historically significant. I do know that a large memorial was erected in El Shat to mark this camp, but would like to find out more about any recorded history of it.Thanks,Nancy (Andjelich) MargraffNancyM3292@aol.com Â

Danko MalekDankoMalek@netscape.netÂ----Sir / THIMCMy name is Danko Malek and I am an DoD contractor I write you with an appeal for help concerning information about right address, web link or a person who can give me answer is there a scholarship fund that helps young Croatians in their studying abroad? Please let me explain:I am writing this e mail driven by wish to help one my friend, an excellent photographer. Quite a while ago, I was conducting a small photography club where a young boy named Dario Andjal joined when he was still in Junior school. He fell in love with photography and even then, his dream become studying photography in Prague, though none of us there believed that in that time. His determination was enormous, and he finished all Photography High School grades as best in class. Problems started when he finished high school. Not a single institution in the Republic of Croatia did not find will to help him, or recognize a potential he had. On some occasions he was almost ridiculed and never taken seriously. Up to now, as I can tell, he received none help at all, despite all letters of recommendation from his previous teachers. There is no institution in Croatia that can give education about photography above high school. Therefore, Dario's dream was to study photography in Prague. After high school, he lived in Prague for two years, learning language and attending classes open to public, all on his own and his parents' expense. Both years he tried to enter this faculty, FAMU, but both times he was declined because he was under age stated by faculty rules, not that he had lack of knowledge and performance. Last falls, he finally passed exams and became full time student of FAMU ( http://www.amu.cz/?r_id=111ÂÂ - www.famu.cz ). All this time, as well as now, his parents were his only support and now he is in great need for a scholarship that can help him finish this college. After all he has done and shown, no one doubts he will finish it with high grades.Dario is firs student that came from Croatia in FAMU in last 9 years, one of few ever. Year he entered as full time student, only two vacancies from countries outside of EU were open, and competitition was hard, as always is because FAMU is one of finest and most prestigious such institutions in the world. My great wish is to help my friend, whom I watched as a child falling in love in photography, was there watching his talent being overcome only by his determination, and with him I felt ashamed when all institutions, from the Department of Culture and Education all the way down to City council turned him down, not even tried to help him and sometimes even ridiculing his dream. Your scholarship fund helps young people to study in Croatia, but I ask you for help to point me in the right direction, a scholarship fund that helps young Croatians to study abroad. There is no possibility of education in photography above high school in The Republic of Croatia, and there never will be, unless we don't help our young people to gather education elsewhere.Thank your for your time, and any information will be greatly appreciated.Danko MalekDankoMalek@netscape.net

I don't remember who published it, but I would be interested in buying a copy of that directory. I would appreciate any help that you can give me in locating this directory.Thank you,Matthew Radocajmatt@jacodar.comÂÂ

(E) Is a car essential to visit Dalmatian Coast?

Is a car essential, or is public transportation adequate?Travel Q & APosted on Sun, May. 29, 2005 Q. We're traveling to Slovenia and Croatia to see Ljubljana, the Julian Alps area and the Dalmatian Coast. Is a car essential, or is public transportation adequate?Jim Luini, OrindaA. Although there's a convenience factor when you leave the driving to someone else, you're probably better off visiting both countries by rental car. That's not to say you can't get around on buses and trains. For instance, the driving distance between between Ljubljana, the capital of Slovenia, and Lake Bled at the foot of the Julian Alps, is less than an hour. Many visitors choose to stay in the Lake Bled area and catch a tourist bus, available at most hotels, for a day trip to Ljubljana. In Croatia, a visit to the Dalmatian Coast would also include a stop at Plitvice Lakes, a UNESCO World Heritage site. But there's no direct bus or train from Slovenia, so a car is necessary. However, you could take a bus from Slovenia to the Croatian capital of Zagreb, then take a bus to Plitvice Lakes. You can find links to bus stations, plus other traveling options, atwww.croatiatraveller.com/transport.htm .Driving in Slovenia and Croatia is relatively easy, and the new highway to the Dalmatian Coast that opened last year has cut travel time significantly.Q. I may be traveling for an extended amount of time and expect that my passport will expire while I'm gone. What should I do?A. You're better off renewing your passport before you depart. Although it's possible to renew it at the U.S. embassy of the country you'll be visiting, lines can sometimes be very long and embassy locations might not be convenient. Also, if your passport expires in the next several months, you may have to renew it anyway before traveling. That's because some countries, including Costa Rica, China, Norway and Japan, won't accept a passport that expires within three to six months of your visit. Check with the U.S. embassy in the country you're visiting to see if it has this requirement. To renew your passport, go to http://travel.state.gov/passport and download the appropriate application form.Have a question?

ÂWhat are the legal consequences if you call an innocent man a war criminal?ÂNenad BachÂSolana: EU's Decision on Croatia Depends on UN By Cihan News Agency Published: Monday 11, 2005 zaman.com The European Union (EU) will decide according to the United Nations (UN) Criminal Tribunal decision about Zagreb according to the Union's High Representative for the Common Foreign and Security Policy (CFSP) Javier Solana.Solana in an interview to a Croatian newspaper, Jutarnji List, said: "EU members will make the final decision. But most of the information that will shape the decision will came from the UN court." The EU had delayed the start of accession negotiations with Croatia due to its failure to surrender the war criminal (?????) from Zagreb, General Ante Gotovina to the UN Criminal Tribunal in The Hague. A research group composed of Solana, EU diplomats, the term president from Luxembourg, the EU Commission, and the upcoming term presidents from Britain as well as Austria will determine if Croatians have conducted a sufficient search to catch Gotovina.
